So I'm thinking of getting a camera to monitor Lexus starting at the beginning of April or so (her 330 day is May 3rd). Can someone tell me what's involved? Can I rent one? Cost? Hookup (how easy/difficult) Etc.

Thanks!

I just got a great deal on a wireless system from Ken Porter of Estate Horse Supply. It is a very high quality system. He is just starting to sell them and is very dedicated to making his customers happy always. He also sells the halter monitors to let you know when your mare lays down flat. Their web site is http://www.horsecarts.com, give them a call. It is probably not on his web site yet, he said he was going to get it put on this week.

I bought a very inexpensive wireless camera last year at Walmart I think is was on sale for like 39.00. It has a hand held 2 inch moniter and also hooks up to a tv. It works great for me. You can pan the stall with the wireless remote that is on the handheld receiver. My barn is not very far from the house and I have a clear view of it so this has worked well for me. When done I can unplug the camera and put them away. Not very fancy however, very functional.

I also bought a 2 camera wireless system that works the same way on sale for 70.00. It works well also. I think alot depends on how far you are from the barn and whether you have a clear view. I have a metal barn so I put the camera up around the sky band so it doesn't have to go through the metal.

I bought my wireless 2 camera system from Radio Shack for $200 -the Swann Night Hawk-plus I got the DVD recording device that Marestare told me about to hook it up to our computer-the Dazzle Video Creator Plus! It was $40.00 on sale. Now I'm just waiting for spring to hook it all up and call Marestare! YIPPEE

Matt -

I just got my wired one for christmas from http://performanceiseverything.com/ it is local to me- they do a lot of video/camera stuff for my association. I have yet to hook mine up though- but the brand seems to be the higher end that everyone is talking about- and they understood what my issues where.

Hope it helps

Cameras are so useful. Not just for foaling (which is incredible) but for monitoring horses that are sick.

I cannot imagine my life without them! And my Breeder Alert!

Walmart no longer can sell surveillance cameras, at first i thought it was just our local walmart policy but called a few more and it is all walmarts, for some reason they can no longer sell them, other then cams for computers..

This is the cam that i have...Healther @ marestare recommended it, its priced very reasonable and what allot of the bigger farms use too. I bought one and have a mare on cam right now and it is great, was easy to hook up (Dad and I managed it all my ourselves) and holding up nicely, only been using it for a few weeks but works good for me

I got mine from Harbor Freight @ http://www.harborfreight.com/cpi/ctaf/disp...temnumber=91202

You can get an extra 120, 250 or 500 ft cable at Radio Shack too

I have 2 wireless 'human' baby monitors with night inferred vision and while I end up leaving one bulb lit it has worked very well for me. I love the wireless part of it and the camera while it can’t see every inch of my stall gives me a good idea of what’s going on, the monitors are black and white which once I have the little bit of light works just fine . I am close enough that I’ve had little interference issues and its been a great time/sleep saver to wake up check the monitor for a few mins and go back to sleep vs get dressed and go to the barn… in the beginning it was ‘only’ a few hundred feet walk to go check on the girls once done often enough it felt like a really LONG walk to do in the middle of the night repeatedly. I am very glad I got them and they have held up, this is the 3rd season of using them. I do take them down and store inside the house when not foal watching but may leave one installed just in case I need to watch over a sick horse at some point.

We bought our cameras from Radio Shack too. We had four cameras. We chose to use the cable extensions they sell because of the distance the barn was from the house and because it was a metal barn/building. We never had any problems with them, they worked great. At night we strung one strand of the small white Christmas lights along the top of the stalls so we could see better at night which also helped with shadows.
