I have a horse with a chronic sinus infection on one side. My vet gave her amoxicillin to clear it up as he's had good luck with that. However, this horse can't tolerate it! Gives her a severe stomach ache! I've tried it twice. SMZ's don't seem to work. Anybody use another antibiotic successfully?

I had a gelding that had a chronic infection in one side and he was finaly diagnosed with a bad guttarol pouch (sp) So have the vet check that!! It was amazing what a difference it made when he had the surgery!! I wish we had checked that first because the surgery was less than what I spent on all the medicine and tests we did!!!

I've never dealt with this, but wonder if something "strong" like Tribressen (sp?) or Naxil (sp again) would knock it out?

I also would have the pouch looked at but a question......how long did you use the SMZ? With something like a sinus infection it can take a good while to clear up.

You may want to ask your vet about Tucoprim.

I had one with a gutteral pouch infection. One vet scoped him and flushed it. He got it again and we put him on SMZs and aa teaspoon of powdered iodine. I mixed it with ketchup to make it thicker and gave it to him for a whole month.... infection gone and never returned!

My TB had several sinus inefections that would keep coming back after treating with antibiotics. After several attempts to clear it up we found out that she had a bad tooth that had to be removed. The tooth was connected to the sinuses and food kept getting pushed up into the sinuses. You might want to think about getting an x-ray of the horses sinuses just to rule that out if the infections keep coming back.

[i have had good results with genocin IM. I had a horse that had penomonia and broncitis several years ago and this is what we used! Good Luck!

Naxcel seems to kick what SMZ doesn't get in my experience but sure depends on what you are dealing with. We had one with dental problems that caused her sinus issues.
