Colostrum Collector

I ran across this product and thought some of you might be interested. It's a little pricey, but it might work well. I use an inverted syringe with the tip cut off, but this might be a good thing to have too.

Laughing a bit!

It had better work...................

This looks like a great product Becky. After my grandson was weaned I stole my daughters manual breast pump and I love it for my mares. It comes with little plastic bags that connect to it. I just freeze some of the collected colostrum and milk in the bags also. It seems to fit my mares just fine . Her's came with her Medela Automatic Breast Pump but I think you can buy them seperately. It is in my foaling kit.

As the "fastest mare milker in England" I find all this paraphernalia very strange.

I have never had any trouble milking anything- except a mouse- I had trouble expressing milk from my mice but I could actually do it!!

Why is it- and this is a serious question, not a criticism- that some people find it so hard??

Is it lack of training (ie there has never been anyone to show you how)???

Like Jane, I have no problem milking my mares to save colostrum each year.

But something like that would be nice if someone did have a problem.

I have hand milked several different types of animals too Jane, horses, cows, goats, etc but there are plenty of people that have never milked anything and it does require a certain knack. Trying to milk a mare that doesn't want to let down for your very first experience is not something you want to do. It isn't as if you go out and practice on your mares so when the time comes and you need one milked a handy little gadget that works quickly and easily is nice to have around. I find the syringes are great - quick, inexpensive and easy but some people prefer something specifically designed for the job.

I didn't ever have a problem milking the mares except when expressing milk repeatedly when feeding a foal that took too long to latch on and I just felt like I might be making her sore..same reason women don't express milk by their own hands when saving their breast milk...just my feelings perhaps more than hers. Also when I first used the pump it was freezing cold and this way I could keep my gloves on.. it WAS so extremely easy to use and the little bags fit right on the the pump and can be ziplocked and stored in the freezer..Just my experience..and my little tiny mares have little tiny teats..
