My project horse I got about two weeks ago has ony had her feet done 1 time in her life and she is 10 months. I called my farrier but he cant come out until sometime this week. HEr feet started cracking, up the hoof wall on one hoof. I took the nippers and clipped of the long hoof, but what can I do to stop the crack?

Have you got a file? Use the edge and file an "X" across the top of it

You will get a lot of info on the Farrier and hoofcare resource center forum.... I go on there whenever I have a question about a hoof ,they are great , and give good practicle advice. I think there is a resin that can be applied by a Farrier, I would get a farrier involved quickly before it turns into something more difficult to treat. I am not a farrier , so i wont give you an answer, only a vet or licenced Farrier should be helping you on this . good luck , and keep me posted , I would like to know how you helped this horse.

If it is a split straight up the hoop, file across the top of it, either a straight line or an X as suggested, I have burned these splits, but would not recommend anyone but a farrier does that as they know how deep they can go.

Keep the foot short and make sure you balance the other foot to match, and apply something to help the foot grow.

Get a farrier to look at it ASAP.

How deep is the crack and how high? Is it just hoof that needs to be trimmed off, or some kind of pressure crack or something going all the way up the hoof? If just a regular crack, you can take the edge of your rasp and use it as a file across the top of the crack, like a T with the top of the T as your file line compared to the crack coming up, if that makes any sense.

Its not real deep. ITs not the extra hoof that is cracked it the actual hoof. The trimmer is comeing this week, but need to call and find out. Its a big horse hoof and probably about 1/4 the way up.

I highly recommend that you post your pictures/question on www.horseshoes.com. It's the best resource for hoofcare - great group of farriers who are incredibly helpful. I've worked with them several times and they've always got great advice.

Best wishes,

If the split is not to deep you can fill it with Equi-Thane Super Fast glue and it will stop the crack! Then when the glue dries ( about 5 minutes) you can file or rasp it smooth! The glue will become part of the hoof wall and when the hoof grows out just trim it as a normal hoof! I've used this many time and it works great!

Its not to deep. But she is getting poop and stuff stuck under it.

My farrier got back to me and he cant make it out until sunday at the earliest so I am going to get some help holding her(shes not good at tieing yet) so I can trim her myself. I will look for that glue, any idea where I can find it?

You can order it online, but that might take a few days.
