I've only used the traditional paste wormers for my minis on a rotating basis. Today I was talking to an experienced mini person who mentioned they use a daily wormer on their show horses during show season. I'd never even considered using the daily wormer - don't really know why - just hadn't.

I'd like to hear from others who have used the daily wormer to better understand its advantages. Do you rotate it like the paste ones? What's the cost like? Can a horse be overwormed?

Would love to hear from others! Thanks in advance for your time!

I use the Strongid 2X daily wormer on all my minis and my big horse. The minis are all enrolled in the Preventicare program, sponsored by Pfizer, and done through my vet. This program pays up to $5,000 for colic surgery if ever needed, no matter what the cause of the colic is. My big horse had 2 colic surgeries and unfortunately he wasn't in the program. He can't be enrolled in the program but he gets the Strongid too. Another vet told me that as more of his clients used the daily Strongid, he noticed that he was ordering fewer colic treatment supplies! Now, obviously colic can be caused by things other than worms, but I am still a big believer in the daily wormer. As part of the Preventcare program, the minis all get paste wormer (Ivermectin) given by the vet twice a year. Obviously you can use a daily wormer without being in the Preventicare program, but I'm not taking any chances, based on my past experience! This is just my experience; you might want to check with your own vet.

I use paste wormer..........have forever. I have fecals done and there are NO worms. So I see no problem in leaving it rather than changing............

I use the Strongid 2CX on everyone here - my veterinarian does not participate in PreventiCare as she said we can get Strongid 2CX cheaper than she can provide us with... and part of the PreventiCare program is that you get the Strongid 2CX from your veterinarian, if I remember correctly.

I also worm in the spring and fall with Ivermectin paste... fecal samples have been negative so it is working so far for us...now if I can just keep Freedom and Independence drinking consistently throughout the winter to stave off the impaction colic that has hit Freedom twice around New Year's Day and threatened Indy...we have a heated water bucket for them in the pasture and they are getting wet, "sloppy" alfalfa cubes and beet pulp with a lot of water mixed in. Indy did not need a visit from our veterinarian but Freedom was not so lucky... She got a bloody nose from the NG tube as she is a brat about taking it... we had to give her some Rompun to get her to take the tube.

One of our veterinarians told us not to use the daily wormer on horses under one year of age - his opinion was that if a foal gets daily wormer they do not build a "tolerance" to worms and might suffer a catastrophic infestation if sold and the new owners did not keep the horse on the daily program. He preferred that our foals receive rotating paste wormers once a month for the first year and then they could switch to the daily wormer.

I know the daily wormer is working for my girls...just my humble opinion. Our Modern Shetland foal, Nefertiti, is currently doing the paste wormers on a monthly basis.

I've used Strongid C2x for years on big horses and small. Never have had a parasite problem. I also paste worm quarterly.

The Preventicare program is a great bonus for using Strongid C, have to jump through some hoops and follow Pfizer's rules but it can really pay off if you have a colic surgery. They have reimbursed me for two (neither was parasite related).

Any horses after weaning and under two years old get daily wormer along with paste wormer. Adult horses get paste wormer (although if they come off a pasture and look ''wormy'' when I buy them I put them on daily wormer until the belly goes away).

I have heard that daily wormer helps control the big-gut problem a lot of youngsters have. It DOES seem to help, don't know if it's a placebo or not though in that respect. Just have had good results so I figure why not.

Also should add my horses are all stalled and on dry lots never pasture so there isn't a worm issue ever. However, I still consider a good worming program important and even the BEST worming program is one of the cheapest horse care elements, particularly with minis and ponies.

Great information! I really appreciate all of you taking the time to respond. The person I talked to today about it also said, even though he has no scientific proof to back it up, he swears he can see a difference in the bellies of those using daily vs paste. Not just in the young ones, but he thinks even on adult horses.

From just these few responses I think I should at least talk to my vet about it. It's obvious that it's working well for some so I should check it out for myself.

Thanks, and keep the info coming!!

Tractor Supply here locally carries the Strongid C 2x ,10# for 39.98. Just got a bucket a few days ago. The more I hear and see the more I like it and the results. Its easy to use and they don't fuss at all so it will probable stay on my shelves.

I also use a paste dewormer (Bimectin brand of Ivermectin usually with the "gold" Ivermectin 2x a year). All our minis are on dry lots. I deworm the adult horses every other month and the young horses monthly.

With the longer season and it never really getting cold down here on the gulf coast of Texas, we use strongid once daily on the show horses and paste womer every 6 weeks with rotating brands, on the rest of the horses every 4 weeks with the rotating paste wormer. It seems to work best for us for bots and worms.

The Horse magazine recently did an article on daily wormers. You can probably find it on their site. The fear now is that using a daily wormer will eventuallly make horses immune to ivermectin. Its a really interesting article

I have a bucket of Strongid C Daily wormer, but I quit using it. I found that I was getting an adverse reaction from my stallion within a few hours of dosing him. So I removed it from his daily diet, to see if that was the cause, and all went back to normal.. Just to make sure I tested him again, on even a smaller dose and sure enough the symptoms came back.. So I decided to use the paste- types insted from here on out.
