My colt followed me out to feed the chickens some bread. I always throw it away when it hits the sell by date. It isn't moldy but I don't keep it. I guess I was used too much as the tester as a kid. Anyway, As I started to rip it into pieces, My colt started to snatch it up. He absolutely loved it. It isn't something he would get on a regular basis. But it didn't seem to hurt him. Any views in this?

My sister's quarter horse gelding LOVES bread.. He won't eat regular horse treats, so my sister treats him with bread

I give my horses a slice or two each as a treat sometimes

The goats, too.

What they REALLY like is a twinkie! I guess that's like white bread plus a cup or so of sugar and fat? They love them though. We usually give them each a twinkie on Xmas and joke about the Festive Christmas Twinkies.

Oh yes! I've given my horses bread as treats for years. Not really fresh bread though, as it sticks in their mouths and they might choke on it. I feed it in small bite size bits. They love it! My mare Girly was a gal after my own heart, she was into donuts!

In all honesty I haven't found too much my horses won't eat. They will kill for a glazed doughnut. I have one mare very fond of pizza and another bit a hole in my screen on our lanai because she wanted french fries and no one was bringing her any. I know these things aren't good for them. they just get a taste. My stallion loves chocolate parfait too.

I just heard from my brother in-law this past weekend that his Grandma always fed her horses a loaf of bread (stale or not as fresh)per day per horse and that you should feed them that in the winter because it helps them keep their body weight up.

I felt a loaf a day per horse is kind of excessive

He said that she use to go to the Hostess outlet and buy enough outdated bread to fill up the back of a pick up bed truck.

Yes, I have horses that liked bread, but please be careful!!! My first horse - many, many years ago - foundered when the restaurant next door fed her their leftover bread without our knowledge. I doubt that a small amount will hurt, but like anything else, you don't want to overdo.

I only give small peices because our chickens won't eat bread unless it is small pieces. Don't you think they are a bit picky. Oh, the chickens won't eat left over vegies either. :DOH!

The man we bought my dad's pony from did not feed his horses grain, he fed them bread. He had a pile of bread as big as a truck sitting in his barn. We were amazed the frist time we saw it, but eis reasoning was that it helped them maintain weight an was more economical. LOL!!

Yep, ours like to also. I don't deliberately feed bread to them but I do toss out the older bread for the wild birds to eat onto our lawn and if one of the minis gets let out on the lawn they usually find it. When I was a kid, I would often share my peanut butter and jelly sandwichs with the horses! They love em.Mary

007, our gelding, when bringing him home across the border we stopped at Timmy's and got a coffee and a blueberry donut, he was travelling in our van. He kept looking and sniffing so I gave him a piece, what a mistake he ate the whole thing...

All of our horses love bread. (and most our horses are picky eaters) It's the only "treat" Country will eat!

One time at a show, my gelding gobbled up all his hay, So we split a mushroom pizza!

Oh yes! Bailey loves bread. In fact, I don't think there isn't anything that Bailey wouldn't eat!

Last night I cut up watermelon and he loved it! He was a slobbering mess as it was very juicey. Willow wasn't too sure about it though.

My boy loves his treats.

Yep to bread......... We even have some who like prezels and chips! (No, we don't do it on a regular basis.)

Last summer when Brianna had her 10th birthday with some friends, part of the party was all the girls helped me make a carrot cake for Brianna's mare -- "BAY BRIANNA" (who was born the same day, but 4 hours later). Part of the process was the girls all took the cake out to Bay Brianna and her pasture buddies.........The horses LOVED it and the kids had a blast.

I was always told not to feed them bread because of the yeast.. ??

i do it too, just recently, because i learned from someone on this forum (sorry i don't recall who) that it can be helpful giving wormer or meds... and wow, was it! i have very few that willingly let me stick the tube in their mouths, so the ease of giving wormer was wonderful... i only had ONE spit out the wormer sandwich, even my hard-to-please mules ate it right up

and Rosie who gets meds 2x a day, would not eat them no matter how i tried but i make a little sandwich and down the hatch with no trouble

I used to work at a petting zoo that handed out loaves of bread to the guests to feed the various animals. Let me tell you that the miniature horses got quite a bit of it since they were the first animals to see on the farm, and some of them ended up chunky, so i would only say feed it as a rare treat, and only a slice or two.

I haven't tried it with mine yet, but i did get Hostess Apple pie spit right onto my forehead when I tried giving it to my saddle horse, Honey :DOH! . Buddy on the other hand could not get enough of it

many many old timers used it to put weight on thin animals ect. I've even gone and got flats of it from our bread outlet to feed as treats. I have several horses so i usually grab a few loaves at a time and just break them up and chuck them in the pasture. they love it.
