Our large horses are already beginning to shed their coats, must be a sign of spring. Some of our minis shed later and some never quite shed all of their coats and have to be body clipped. Do any of your minis have issues shedding their coats completely?

I have only had my minis for a short time, but...

My stallion was a yearling last spring and I needed/wanted to clip him. I just bought him, so couldn't wait til he shed out to see what was underneath.

My then 2 year old filly, was pretty much shed out when I brought her home in late April, a few long hairs on her jaw, but otherwise shed out.

My senior half-arab gelding is already shedding his long, white guard hairs. They are all over the place. The other horses are mostly sorrel, so their shedding isn't as noticeable with all the red cattle hair all over the place.

Sherry,

I do know that Tipper shed out beautifully and completely last summer but mine haven't started shedding yet. He may shed a little later than the big horses do though.

mine shed... but it takes a while. I just clip them and get it over with.

My first mini I bought 3 years ago he was from Mo., he didn't shed well for 2 seasons, my vet said he has to get acclimated to this climate, he now sheds great... Kathy

I've had large horses as long as I've been able to walk, all of them staring to shed in late winter/early spring.

When I got my first minis last summer (August), both of them still had long hairs and weren't sleek at all. This may have been to poor diet, since they came from a horse trader's barn and were knee deep in mud and eating off an old round bale of hay (nothing else), I assumed it was due to poor nutrition.

I'm interested in seeing how and if they shed out this year after good deworming cycle and good nutrtion.

Then I purchased a colt from a "show barn", and he still was shedding in the middle of August :new_shocked: .

So I am assuming that the minis keep a fuller coat year round and if shown in early spring would require clipping.

Last week I noticed that some of our miniatures (all the pregnant ladies) started to shed and the others not...

Our farrier said it was because of the fact that pregnant mares start to shed almost always earlier then others... Never heard that before

: . But the theory works in our herd anyway at the moment

Anyone else heard of that before or has experience with that?

My pregnant mares and my stallions(guess their getting ready for the girls

: ) always shed out the earliest. I also find that the later in the year a foal is born the less hair they have and they don't have to be clipped neccessarily for the heat of summer.

I shaved mine last spring because they were sweating in their long hair and they didn't seem to be shedding to well. All 3 of them are starting to shed already, I'll let them shed naturally until it gets warm enought to shave them.
