I have read about four dog attacks in various places, all since Thanksgiving, and all by pit bulls. One man in CA was killed. He knew the dogs and was the grandfather of the family and was just sitting outside having a cigarette break. Other than that case, the other three attacks were in various places in TX, and ALL were because the owners did not contain their dogs and I noticed in each case, the dogs had gotten out repeatedly before, and some had had instances of mauling other animals before as well. One woman was in her OWN back yard and the dogs came in and attacked her. One was a child on a bicycle.

In TN, 12 pits were just picked up after the owner abandoned them at the house. He was laid off his job, and the electricity cut off, so he left and left the dogs there. Some were dead, some malnourished, and there were remains.... One dog had killed another. He was arrested (yeah!) and is suspected of using the dogs for fighting, but I dont know if laws there are going to do much to punish him.

When are people going to get the hint, and it doesnt matter what kind of dog you have, keep them contained and take responsibility for their animals!!!!

I dont know what kind of laws various states have, but I think if someone's dogs are continually escaping, or are wreaking havoc on their neighborhood, whether it's other animals or people, the people should be fined HEAVILY, made to pay for any and all damages, and banned from ever owning another dog. They are obviously not responsible and don't care. But how do you pay for a life, like the grandfather that was killed?!!! I just couldnt live with myself if I had a dog that did anything like this and caused harm or aggravation to someone else...

In Ontario, a few summers ago, there was a bunch of Pit Bull attacks too. I don't know if it was the moon or what, but it seemed like every other day there was news of another attack. Now, they are banned in Ontario (no breeding). The people that own them from before the ban can keep them, of course, but they must be muzzled when out walking etc.

There has been a number of Pot bull attacks between here and Portland. One of the Reporters got a nasty email from a Pit Bull lover which she aired...saying these dogs were missunderstood and to stop reporting the attacks.... reporters anwser was.. we report ALL dog attacks and that the News channel was not going to stop reporting just Pit Bull attacks and kills.

Is a combo of bad breeding, bad training and the owners not giving a rats backside where their dogs are during the day or night. Then good people get killed or hurt. Not kosher.

I think Shari summed it up very well.......It IS a combo of things.

I agree that it is a combination of things but so tragic just the same. There was a 5 year old little girl killed in a neighboring town in September, and two attacks just the other day. The local Humane Society said that pit bull attacks are more likely to be reported but that the most bites reported were actually by Chihuahuas (in our county). She also said that breed-specific bans were not allowed in California, but I'm not sure about that.
