I got a letter from these people saying I can registered my domain name with them. But why should I, are they for real? I thought it was mine ( but I have a lot to learn). They say when it expires next year that anyone could use it but I have it through a website place and I thought as long as I use them its registered with them but maybe thats not enough?

Has anyone done this or even heard of them?

most of these companies prey on people not remembering who they registered their dot.com name with. most (but not all) are just trying to get you to renew with them.

an easy way to check is go to whois.com and look up your own dot.com name and see the name of the company you registered with. It will also tell you when it expires

Oh man, that company has been trying to get me to "use them" for YEARS!!! Sooooo annoying.

I'd definitely stay away, I'm quite happy with my host.

To answer part of your question though, even if you're paying a host to host your website you also have to pay a small fee for them (in most cases, unless u choose to do it yourself) to renew your domain name. So, yes, when your domain expires anyone can use it if your host doesn't contact you and say "hey your hosting plan and domain name expire soon, do you want to renew?" So basically you're likely to have 2 charges, at least my host charges me for my plan with them in one transaction and another transaction for the domain name.
