For those of you who have average sized horses as well as miniatures: does your farrier charge differently for the mini's? Less? More? Do they require that you have your mini up on something so they don't have bend so far?

I can't get any to even work on mini's down here. So I do them myself with my husband overseeing it. He's got years and years of expereince shoeing the big guys, and has helped me with the littles.

I just spent $45 for a trim. It was hard to find someone who would come out here and he does seem to have experience with minis. I'm in Northern Nevada at the crossroads in the middle of nowhere.

I don't have a full size horse, but my farrier charges $25 per horse for up to 5 horse and $20 for 6 and over. I know he does full size horses but on barefoot method because he doesn't shoe any horses. My farrier is a young guy (late 20's? early 30's) and so far he hasn't asked for them to be "up" on anything.

So far most of the farriers I talked to in this area are willing to do the minis hooves. They don't require them to be up on anything but I have heard somplaints about people not controlling them from biting the farriers lol That is hilarious!

I pay $15 for my minis and $30 for my quarter horse.

We did build a stand for them and trained most of them to behave nicely on it however my farrier didn't need it and prefers to do them on the ground.

I live in the middle of nowhere, my farrier charges the same for full-size and minis (and drafts for that matter); although, he has been known to charge more for difficult owners (the ones who know it all and tell him his job, and such). He does a great job, and I'm grateful to have him. He does have a 4 horse minimum to come out, which is understandable, since he drives about 50 miles one-way to get here. [i have no problem covering the 4-horse minimum; I have 12 minis and 3 full-size, and he comes every 4 weeks, and we rotate the horses through the schedule. I have one mini mare on a 4 week schedule, one saddle horse on 12-week and the rest on typically 8 weeks. And, to help my budget, I trim a few here and there. ]

We have a farrier school here. The people going t the school PAY to attend. From past expeariance, they do a better job than those in business. I don't pay for the service and they come to the barn. But, it costs $35-$45 for a trim. Big or little.

I have a great Natural Barefoot trimmer to do mine. $25 for Minis $35 for my big horse..She just kneels on the ground..She has commented that she loves that I clicker train and my Mini is pretty easy to do..She has trouble with people that let them get away with murder ( easy to do with the Minis) and they were never taught to stand for a farrier.

My farrier charges $35 for big horses and $30 for mini's for barefoot trim every 6-8 weeks. For the mini's he uses knee pads(like volleyball players use) and prefers to do them on the ground.

As a mini horse farrier, I charge $15 per mini and a $10 house call fee for the county. I do charge a lil more IF the owner has founder issues and dont want to have them trimmed in the proper time frame (waits half - full yr or longer to have me back out).

I dont require them to be up or anything special... ONLY that they are already ready for me upon arrival. I cant stand showing up to a clients house and either of the following is taking place...

* Owner not home

* Owner has no $$$

* No halter on horse(s), horse(s) in field, AND horse(s) who take hrs on end to catch and owner dont want to help catching

* Imbedded halters!!!

Otherwise, bitting, kicking, rearing, not standing still, founder, bending over getting bruses and cuts, and any other horse thing is all part of farriering. It might be a lil painful, and MUCH APPERCIATED IF horses are well manered, BUT it all goes with the job, any farrier who cant stand a lil kick or bit once in a while is in the wrong profession... IMO!

$40 per horse here, regardless of size. I tip for naughty horses.

My farrier charges the same for trimming the minis as he does for trimming our older Quarter horses. He's very reasonable in his pricing, and does a great job with shoeing our other horses.

My barefoot trimmer charges the same for both big and small. It still takes about the same amount of time for both and my trimmer is amazing so I don't have a problem with that. It kind of like someone stall boarding a mini versus a big horse. The stall is being charged the same for big and small since the barn owner would lose out on money if they charged less for the mini when they could have a big horse in the same stall being charged full price. BTW, I board and I'm charged the same for my big girls as I am for the little ones.
