Our first foal of the year was born early yesterday morning...a beautiful colt. Unfortunately he had a rough start...we were there, however his temperature was too low (it was a cold morning here...well...for WA that is!)...so he wouldn't get up...which of course meant he wasn't nursing. We tried blankets, hair dryer, heat lamps, and tried giving him colostrum (which he wasn't interested in). So we of course had the vet out...and the poor little guy was tubed twice...and my wonderful hubby and mother in law (countryrose)

: spent most of the day yesterday bringing his body temperature up to where it needed to be. I had called hubby yesterday afternoon to check in and he and the colt (who he has named Rascal) spent an hour wrapped up in a blanket on the couch watching a movie...I would have LOVED to have seen that picture...but he wouldn't let Cheryl take one...dang it  But all is fine now...his temp is up and he's a nursing fool. The vet is coming back out today to check him over again and make sure he got enough colostrum...but as of now things are MUCH better. So now I just need to think up some names...one name I thought of was Flyin G's Causin A Commotion...because he certainly did :bgrin

Here is his sire...Little Kings Russian Revelation (a White Russian son out of a Fishers Master Mickey daughter):

And his dam is FLF Stormys Midnight Sonata, a Bond/King Tiger bred mare:

And last but not least...the little guy himself...Rascal:

So...what color do you think he is...initially I just thought buckskin...wasn't really paying much attention to the dorsal stripe because we were more worried about getting him up...but the dorsal definitely is there as you can see from the last picture...and you can also see the patch the vet clipped...it's very dark underneath his outer baby fuzz...so grulla???

Thanks for letting me share!

I'm going to say Rascal is going to end up a dark buckskin. His older brother Ivan is a dark buckskin like that, so I don't think it is out of the realm of possibility. Revelation himself was darker when he was down here before you bought him. I remember him as being almost smutty buckskin. He looks really good! Congrats on a beautiful baby.

Thanks bluerogue...and you're absolutely right...Russian is a darker buckskin...still golden but with pretty dapples (I think he may also carry silver)...and this colt is really the spitting image of his dad in his winter coat...but it's the dorsal that's throwing me...I thought if he had a dorsal he would be some form of dun...and I am by NO MEANS a color expert so I could be completely off base

And just so everyone knows...I'M OPEN TO NAME SUGGESTIONS!

Well, dorsal stripes don't always mean dun. I have a 4 year filly who has a BIG dorsal stripe... going through her mane, too. As far as I know, she's not dun. She shows nothing else that would suggest it. She's had the stripe since birth though. It's never gone away. I've asked multiple people, and they all say she looks like something else, but that she could be dun. It's confusing, I know. Sorry I couldn't be more help with his color!

:bgrin Very confusing...I was on a site that was showing a lot of different dun horses...and it said they had to have the dorsal...but not necessarily other characteristics...so that's why I'm confused...well...I'm just easily confused anyways so maybe that's it  I'd just be perfectly happy calling him a buckskin honestly...just figured I better check to make sure.

I believe he will be colored much like mom.

Very beautiful! My buckskin White Russian son (now sold to Debra Row) had/has a dorsal, as does his son. Neither have dun as far as I know, though sometimes when you clip them they look darker underneath, they are both very light gold buckskins.

My mare Lailah's dam was colored a lot like your mare, though she was much lighter in the Spring, and her foals were either black or black/brown buckskin. Hard telling w/out doing a lot of ruling out type testing, but I'd say buckskin w/smutty or sooty...?

Cute guy!!! Congratulations.

Handsome colt and congratulations. I'm sure he will come along fine now that he is nursing. So much to learn in this new world for a little fella. I liked Rascal.

Correct me if I'm wrong....but there is currently no test for "DUN". So how do you know if your "Buckskins" with dorsals don't carry Dun as well (Dunskins) ? Many Buckskins carry Dun too....doesn't change the coloring much....but Dun puts the dorsal on.

BTW.....that colt is STUNNING! Well worth all the effort you guys put into him!
