Foal -Time strips

I have always used the pool strips. Get the sample, walk to the counter, mix and dilute the sample, yadda, yadda. All well and good, until I tried these Foal-Time strips (LB advertisers, so I'm feeling free to toot their horn). SO simple to use. Walk up to the mare and get one drop of milk from her on the strip. EZ-PZ. Compare it to the color chart and you're done. So far, the strips have been 100% accurate. Mare hits 6.4 pH and you can count on a foal very soon. When my pool strips hit 6.4, I found the results extremely variable between then and time to foaling. The most recent foaling mare tested 6.7 at 2 p.m., then 6.4 at dinnertime, and foaled at 11:55 that night. I will never go back to the pool strips and feel 100% confidence in the use of the Foal-Time strips.

I just ordered these (from an ad on the LB Sale Board) a couple of days ago and looking forward to using them. I've also used the pool strips, they seem a bit unreliable, and I've used a Mare Foaling Predictor Kit for years with good success, but it is the mixing, etc. And, the test strips I have for that are old and guess what they do when they get old? They turn color immediately, all five squares, and you think "she's going to foal right away!" and then day after day goes by without the mare foaling.

When I get my strips I'll report how I like them.

I can barely read their product page, it comes up black letters on nearly-black background. I did go to the instruction page, and it sounds like a good deal, may have to order some to try this year.

I used them last year along with the Mother Natures test kit, (first time foal and I wanted to be sure!). They worked wonderful! They always read exactly what the testing kit read. They were so much easier too, my mare had a bag but it was difficult to get much out and the one drop strip was so convenient. I have raised and milked cows and itty bitty Nigerian Dwarf goats so that wasn't an issue, Missy just didn't put much out. I would recommend them.

To add, when that strip said within 48 hours fnally, she foaled 7 hours later and I was able to be right there after watching on cam.

I used them recently when Hope was in foal. I was extremely happy with them. You can take one strip and tear it and get 4-5 tests out of it as the test only takes a tiny drop. My mare stayed at 6.8 for quite a while, but once she hit 6.4 it was maybe 6 hours until she foaled.

I'll definitely use them again and highly recommend them. Kim and Karen are always ready to answer questions too.

Test strips are hard to interpret if they aren't PRECISELY one mark or another. I have had much better luck with the titration kits such as FoalWatch (foalwatching.com). In my experience they are much more accurate and much more reliable. No guesswork. The strips are easier and faster, but to me, I rather spend a few minutes doing a test rather than extra nights of no sleep.

Hi Mary, I used them for the first time on my last foal! I found them to be very easy to use and very accurate.

I tested 2 x day toward the end and found that it was a gradual change in ph until the morning she foaled

She tested ready and had the foal at 1 pm. Rita

They work wonderful!!! We have always used them we test when the mare looks to be getting close, once a week or so..You can tell the change in their milk anyway before they are going to foal.. but they have been 100% accurate, and we always have a foal within the day they test ready!

I got the Mother Natures Foaling predictor Kit and have never used anything like this before but thought I would give them ago.

My question is when do you start using them. My mare has 3 wks to go and has a 1/2 bag and I probably could get milk but dont want to bother her.

So do you start testing about a wk out to get a base line so to speak or closer to when you think she is going to foal.

I occassionally use the pool strips but I never dilute it. I just put the milk sample right on it and it comes out exactly the same as mixing with distilled water. I think they tell people to mix it just to make it easier to dip the stick in.

Nathan nothing comes up when I put that web addy in
