Our new home sweet home aint so sweet. Finally got the horses moved over yesterday (Thank You Kim!) and sure as the sun rises here comes the freaking dogs that killed our chickens. These horses werent even here for 8 hours and they attempted to get my stallion that was in the stall in the barn, not once but TWICE! I heard him sound off at around 11:00 and made a run for it and there were 4 in the barn-they ran off. Hubby now pulls the Durango around and stays in it for the night and if they didnt try to come back at 5 this morning. We are off to get a bigger gun and also will be purchasing 2 guard dogs. The only problem is they will keep coming back until we can kill them, in the meantime how does anybody sleep and yet go to work knowing theses dogs are out there??? Hubbys driving around to the houses in back of us knocking on doors trying to find these dogs and owners. Please pray for us that until these dogs are killed that my horses dont suffer a full blown attack.

Am so sorry to hear you are having problems with the dogs. I hope you are able to get rid of them.

Here,,,we are having coyote problems and they are getting bold. Jumping right through the hot wire.

Never seen the like. DH will be putting more grounding rods in today. If I can't get them to stop will have to trap and shoot them. Sigh ~ ~

I know what you are going throught I know in my area if dogs are chasing your horse you have the right to shot them but you will want to check your local laws. I don't have the heart to shot them b/c I might hit one of my horse , so I called the local human socitey and told them the situation and they can right out and were able to get the dogs.

22 caliber repeating rifle will do the trick! Shoot shovel and SHHHHHH...my prayers are with you and yours.

This is Terrible! I never want to kill any animal, but this is one of those situations where it's called for. The problem is that in addition to being a threat to your animals, dogs that get together in a pack like that - even dogs that were once nice family pets - can become very aggressive toward people to. The next step in the progression will be children! IMO these dogs need to be stopped.

I'm sooooo sorry you're having to deal with this!

I am sorry to hear this, but maybe get a female in heat, and set up a live trap?

& Yes, talk with your local dog catchers in your area, which hope can give you good advice.

I hate dog packs. They kill just for the thrill. I'm with Dimimore with the 3 "S" method. If you can't get them talk to your local animal control......they'll often help trap the dogs. Good luck. I know you won't be sleeping much until they're taken care of.

Oh, that is so distressing. I hope you get them before they get "you."

I'm so sorry you're having to go through this. Who do the dogs belong to?

Liz M.

Oh how aggravating! Sorry you are having this problem and I hope you eliminate the dogs soon.

I agree with previous posts........

Dogs running in packs are dangerous! Not only to others' livestock, pets, but children too!

Animal Control and the Humane Society are the first step, but if they aren't any help -- then it's the SSS method (shoot, shovel, & shutup). Using a female dog in heat is an interesting idea too.......if you can find one from someone willing to participate.

Wishing you guys all the best.

I KNOW THIS SOUNDS AWEFULL BUT SOAK ABOUT EIGHT LARGE SPONGES IN GREASE. I WAS TOLD TO USE LIKE A BACON OR HAMBURG GREASE AND PLACE THEM RATE AT THE ENTRANCE OF YOUR BARN. THE DOGS WILL NORMALLY JUST INHALE THEM WITHOUT CHEWING AND BASICALLY GET A BLOCKAGE AND DIE. I WAS TOLD IT WORKS GREAT AS A LAST RESORT BECAUSE I AM SURE IT IS A PAINFULL DEATH TO THE DOG BUT IT WOULD BE MUST MORE PAINFULL FOR YOUR MINIS IF THEY GOT ATTACKED. DOGS LIKE THAT NEED TO BE DESTROYED, AND IF THEY ARE A NEIGHBORS ANIMAL, WELL THEY SHOULD HAVE BEEN CONTAINED. A LOCAL FARMER TOLD ME HE DOES IT ONCE A YEAR AND IT WIPES THE COYOTES OUT. I AM SORRY YOU HAVE TO FEEL THIS WAY AND NOT GET ANY SLEEP. WE PUT OUR TWO COLTS OUT AND IN 4 HOURS WE HAD TWO COYOTES IN OUR PASTURE. THIS IS WHAT WE WERE TOLD TO DO. WE ALSO GOT A LLAMA TO PROTECT THE MINIS BUT WHEN A NEIGHBORS DOG GOT INTO THE PASTURE WITH MY MINIS, SHE JUMPED OUT SO I DONT THINK THAT WORKED OUT SO WELL FOR ME. GOOD LUCK. IF YOU LEGALLY CANT SHOOT THEM THIS MAY BE AN OPTION FOR YOU. BEST WISHES!!!!!!!!

Ive heard this used with sheep. But get a Donkey. They are "anti-dog" and will fight against one. The larger standard jack or gelded donkey is what Ive heard to be used. Ive been looking into getting a large donkey that I could ride but we've worried because our dog runs loose with the horses. Anyone please correct me if I am wrong on this.

The sponge thing is something I will try for sure. Here in Texas you can kill anything that comes on your property any way you see fit-got that straight from the sheriffs office. There is no pound or humane society here that can help. No leash laws either. We are on our own. We are looking at getting a hog trap so we can trap some of them. You can only hit one when you shoot & then poof they are gone, but if we can trap one & shoot another one-I'm thinking thats 2 gone right there. I do not like the idea of shooting one per night. Also we dont even have to bury these suckers we can just throw them on the fence line and let the vultures have dinner.

Thinking of different ways to kill these stray dogs makes me crazy. Once again I feel not only sad and angry for you but I also feel sad for the dogs. It is not their fault. It is the fault of the non-responsible owners that allow them to populate and run at large, and they are the ones that should be punished, not them, not you and most certainly not your animals. I hope you can locate them.

Getting dogs for protection for your animals will most likely only cause a dog fight between your dogs and them. I've been down this road before. I would suggest that you use field fencing to help keep the dogs out of your fields and add a hot wire and maybe some cow bells on your gates or wherever you think they are getting in. I'm sorry that is all I can come up with for an idea for you.

Another unjust part of this whole thing is that you are put in the position to have to go to more expense to protect what should already be safe on your own property.

Do you think the dogs are strays or the owners are letting them run??? Gosh, that makes me so mad when people let their dogs run like that...It's not the dogs fault, but the owners. Why do people not take care of their animals??? It drives me bonkers...I would never dream of letting my dogs just run, I would worry to much about them.

I'm sorry you and your family can't sleep because of this....it is a sad situation. Try not to feel guilty about "taking" care of the situation whichever way you must...you have to protect your animals.

That kind of death for any living thing just makes me cringe.........I would look at all other options FIRST....

THAT IS WHY I SAID LAST OPTION, IMAGINE HOW PAINFULL IT WOULD BE FOR A MINI TO BE ATTACKED. I KNOW IT IS NOT THE FAULT OF THE DOGS, IT IS THE FAULT OF THE NEGLIGENT OWNERS. THE THOUGHT THAT THEY HAVE BEEN COMING BACK SAYS THEY ARE NOT GOING TO STOP UNLESS DESTROYED AND EVEN IF THE OWNER IS FOUND AND THE ANIMAL TIED UP WHO IS TO SAY IT WOULD NOT GET LOOSE UNEXPECTEDLY. SOMETIMES YOU CANT GET A GOOD SHOT WITHOUT RISKING YOUR ANIMALS, IF YOU GOT A BAD SHOT IT WOULD BE NO DIFFERENT THAN THE DOG RUNNING AWAY INTO THE WOODS AND SUFFERING. I UNDERSTAND YOU SAYING IT MAKES YOU CRINGE, IT MAKES ME CRINGE TOO.

If you know of anyone who has lamas borrow one! They will protect your minis from dogs or other canine style animals. They are extremely protective of their herd and will attack especially dogs. They are great with minis, sheep or other herd animals.

Other than that a lead injection will work for them

This entire post makes me sick.

If these are truley someone's dogs and not wild dogs why in the world would you be trying to kill them. If someone even dared tried to kill my dog it would be shoot, shovel and SHHH for the person....no questions asked..... :new_2gunsfiring_v1:

Nothing is worth the life of a dog. Nothing...Dogs are like family members and if someone out there treated their dog so badly that the dogs are running around the country side, then that person should be shot as wel..

Brianna- what would YOU do if a pack of dogs let loose by someone attacked and ripped to pieces in front of you, God Forbid, your horse??

Go and do a search for this kind of attack, there are some pretty graphic pictures of a horse with no anus in there somewhere.

If these dogs are even in danger of attacking the horses they should be got rid of by any humane methods possible.

I feel for the owners of the horse, I have NO feelings except contempt for the owners of the dogs.

Dogs and cats are dumped in their THOUSANDS every day for one reason or another, the shelters are full to bursting and to shoot a dog dead will not hurt it.

If my dogs got out and got into this situation I would be distraught, but I would also be SO relieved that they were stopped before any real damage was done.
