i think a lot of these ways to killings dogs are childish........what i mean are the use of the sponge or poison. It is kind of like payback. "You hurt me and my family/horses when you attacked them so i am going to get you back in the worst possible way........long pain and suffering. I could just put a bullet in your head and not let you suffer but i decided to get some payback.....even if it is not your fault" This is kind of what using a sponge or poison is saying.

I am sorry if i offended anyone, but this Forum is about being able to express your thoughts/feelings without being critized horribly -like i have seen on this topic- on this topic we should respect each others point of view and see where they are coming from.

I am Truly Ashamed

Yeah, I know that. I know so much about dogs it would make your head spin.
With all due respect - anyone who actually brags like that - is not an expert. On any subject.

It is wrong of you to bash other posters stuck in a terrible situation. Shame on you.

Someone's pet - even yours - can sometimes do things that are out of character.

YOU sounded callous and cold about a horse that was attacking dogs... yet you feel free to point the finger at others? Wow - talk about contradictions.

A few years ago at a farm I worked on - I heard frantic mares calling in the pasture... and saw two Siberian Huskies running some minis, grabbing at their hocks and tails and butts... the llamas in the field did nothing. Just laid there and watched. The buckskin stallion was trying to spin and attack the dogs - but they were too much for him and he had bites all over his back end. I called and the horses ran for the gate as I opened it to the smaller paddock... they ran through and I slammed the gate i the dogs' faces - and yelled at them. They loped back to their people who were walking by on the road - totally unconcerned. I jumped in the truck and went after them to talk - and they assured me those dogs were "just playing". NOT. I informed then that any dog seen running livestock or game could legally be SHOT and they were outraged at that cruelty. The very next week the same two dogs were chasing elk down the road a ways and one of them was shot by the property owner.

A dog - not an elk. I suppose he was just playing. *sigh*

Please talk to Tony and other members here who have been through horrific dog attack situations - and have a large dose of reality.

Yeah well, you have to actually catch them in the act and be a good shot to ensure that that all plays out nicely.

I am not keen on the sponge thing... baited traps may be the way to go - and hopefully those dogs have tags on so the owners can be held responsible...

Even though none of us know nothing about NVsOkapi, we are judging them and there knowledge on what they say. If they she/he thinks that way they will have to suffer the consequences. nothing will be done when we are yelling at the person or critisizing them so harshly. All that will be done is hurt, embaresed and angry feelings and that is not what the forum should be doing. it should be helping people. If someone has a diff. opinion than yourself you should express yours and not critisize the person just because u think you are right! I garanty that half of the people registered at this forum will never come back or will never say anything again because they were dimissd, yelled at, or critisized because they expressed thier personal thoughts!

There is a difference between expressing one's opinions and just being rude. Both sides have gone off and said pretty harsh things, but NVsOkapi's posts have all be rather inflammatory- what most forums would call either flaming or trolling posts. She did not express her opinions in a calm logical manner.

If someone has a difference of opinion, it's fine to be posted- but not in the manner in which it was stated, which was quite spiteful. This forum has been home to many debates and conversations, and yes... arguements. It happens everywhere.

Granted, alot of us (myself included, somewhat) went a bit overboard in reply- if the original post by Brianna hadn't been so nasty, things wouldn't have gotten so out of hand.

 WE SHOULD NOT BLAME OTHERS FOR MAKING US DO ANYTHING OR SAY ANYTHING. WE ALL MAKE CHOICES AND NO ONE CAN MAKE US TYPE ANYTHING WE DON'T WANT TO. EVERYTHING WE DO EACH DAY IS A CHOICE, "SHE STATRED IT" ISN'T A VALID EXCUSE TO DO OR SAY ANYTHING NASTY. THIS IS JUST MY OPINION, AND ALSO HOW I CHOOSE TO LIVE EVERYDAY, WEATHER IT IS DEALING WITH PEOPLE IN PERSON OR ON FORUMS.

I agree with previous posts........

.... then it's the SSS method (shoot, shovel, & shutup). Using a female dog in heat is an interesting idea too.......if you can find one from someone willing to participate.
Hey Maryann:

Thanks for explaining 3-S method!

Here in the Northwoods, stores have a large selection of dear hunting "scents". Probably more than Macy's perfume selection. Your "dog in heat" scent idea is terrific.....maybe there's an appropriate "doggie perfume in a bottle" on the internet.

Perhaps cayenne pepper filled balloons, strategically placed, may be an option. Amazing how loud popping sounds, followed by burning eyes, give mini owners an opportunity to perfect their 3-S program. After all, people/minis deserve a sporting chance.

GOOD LUCK DENISE! I HOPE ALL YOUR MINIS STAY SAFE! I WOULD DO ANYTHING IN MY POWER TO PROTECT MY MINIS NO MATTER WHAT IS REQUIRED ME TO DO. WHEN OWNING A ANIMAL I TAKE FULL RESPONSIBILITY TO PROTECT IT, THE OWNER OF THESE DOGS IF ANY SHOULD HAVE TAKEN THEIR RESPONSIBILITY AS A DOG OWNER AND PROTECT THEM BY CONTAINING THEM. I THINK EVERYONE UNDERSTANDS IT IS NOT THE FAULT OF THE DOGS BUT THE NEGLIGENT OWNERS. EITHER WAY THEY ARE A THREAT TO YOU AND THAT IS NOT FAIR TO YOU OR YOUR MINIS TO BE UNDER THAT STRESS. THIS IS A PLACE TO GIVE OPINIONS ON THE TOPIC RIGHT........NOT ON OTHER PEOPLES SUGGESTIONS. SEEMS LIKE THE TOPIC OFTEN GETS PUT ASIDE, IN THIS CASE POOR DENISE I AM SURE WOULD TAKE ANY SUGGESTION SHE COULD GET TO BE ABLE TO SLEEP AT NIGHT KNOWING HER MINIS ARE SAFE BECAUSE THEY ARE HER RESPONSIBILITY. BEST WISHES!

Hello everyone!!

Well I was just reading my book on Secretariat, when I came across a good quote that applies to the arguments made on this topic. I realize people are brought up differently when it comes to religion so I will blank the first word out so I dont offend anyone.

" _____ grant me the strength to accept the things I cannot change, the courage to change the things I can."

You cannot change someones opinions or ideas, and I think there are some who need to accept this instead of making rude comments. and instead of making these comments should think of a positive way to help, for example, write a letter to your local government body about a need for animal control shelter, which will help trap, neuter/spay, rehome, liscence animals, as well as educate the public about appropriate animal care through seminars, implementing programs, rules, and fines (for picking up stray, problem, loose animals).

After all these people dont ask for these dogs to be on thier property terrorizing thier animals, and dont want to be in the situation where they have to shoot an animal. It is because of the people who dont care or are uneducated about animal instincts that these animals are also put into this situation. I am very fortunate to live in an area where we have a great animal control and in the past 5 years I think I have only heard of one dog attacking livestock and was rehomed in a home with no other animals in the city where there is no livestock ( and is doing wonderfully!! we see her at our vet clinic!)

Who knows... if a shelter gets started... YOU could be the one responsible for saving both livestock, (minis, horses, goats etc.) as well as the dogs who could potentially harm them!!! NOW THAT WOULD BE LOVING ANIMALS, DOGS ETC.!!!

Denise... I hope you can sleep peacefully soon! That is a horrible situation to be in, and I wish you the best of luck with these animals and hope that it all ends soon!!

Anyways just a thought!!!!

Denice I hope you and yours are well! I hope you will think twice about using baits[ sents] and poisons, as you may "attract "other inocent animals who are only attracted to the smell of bacon or a dog in heat.Im sorry you got an ear full when asking for help. the one person who might be able to help is your county brand inspector. I belive in Tx they still have great power in these matters. even being able to form a posse . if a dog is killed and can be identified its owner can be charged with any damages . including the time to hunt them. its been many years since I was in Tx but I dont think thats changed. good luck DR.

Morning Group,

Here is a link to a topic posting reguarding dog attacks on alpacas and llamas. It was just so timely given the topic at hand here these last couple days.

http://www.alpacanation.com/forum/topic.asp?TOPIC_ID=3650

Denise, I sincerely hope you are able to resolve your issues with the dogs in your neighborhood. I, like you, would do whatever it takes!

I have personally seen dog attacks, so really dont want to start my day off with the video, but thank you for sharing that in case others dont realize how horrible it can be and need to realize these dogs are NOT playing!

Let's not turn this lady's dilemma into a morbid and gross conversation here- she has enough stress with the situation and I really feel for her. Hopefully something will come up that they will find the dogs owners and be able to report them, complain so the dogs are locked up, or SOMETHING, but if not, well.... she must protect her property and the lives of others.

You have my support and I hope that things work out well for you.

I bought a guard donkey after nearly losing a mare to a neighbor's pet black labs. I found them on my property one morning (luckily I got up a little earlier than normal!) and they had zeroed in on one little black mare. They were chasing her back and forth through the herd, ripping at her stomach. Some of the other horses tried to defend her, but didn't succeed. I yelled to chase the dogs out, then pulled on my shoes and stepped outside. They were already back and after her again!!

The owner wouldn't do anything. He denied that it was his dogs that did it (even though I got a VERY good look at them) and said he couldn't keep them up since they were fence jumpers. He wouldn't even try. And, he wouldn't help with the vet bills, which were very high.

A few days later, I bought a standard size jenny who was a known dog killer. Xena is wonderful. If she sees a dog coming, she will put herself between it and the Miniatures, and go after it if it gets too close. Even if one is on the other side of the fence, she'll guard the fenceline and intimidate it.

I would strongly recommend getting a donkey. I was advised by donkey breeders not to use a Miniature donkey, though, because a pack of dogs could easily bring a Miniature down.

The only problem with my donkey is that she doesn't like new horses added to her herd. If I want to put a new horse in with her, it has to go into an adjacent pen for a few days until she gets to know it. Once she does, she'll accept it with no problem.

Hope all goes well for you. I know from experience how terrifying this situation is!

Pat
