Yesterday was a sad day for many of us in my family. We had to finally lay to rest our old Gelding Duke. He was our first horse along with Shyan. We bought them together 3 years ago. Both driving horses, duke was very much MY driving horse. He was not a beginners driving horse even though he was very much a bombproof horse. You could do anything to him.
3 Weeks ago he colicked on me. I stayed up with him for 3 nights. We fought together to keep him up. He wasn't going to let go that easily. As soon as he felt the need to lay down, he would just start walking. He always gave me a heads up so that I could keep him moving. When we finally made it through his colic, in all the thrashing he did, he punctured his eye. I had the vet out and began treating it. Becuase we cought it early I wasn't worried. The vet made me feel pretty confident in the eye condition. So I left on my planned vacation. I left someone in charge of his eye care. By the time I left his eye hadn't healed, but did look better. Becuase of his age, I figured he might just need a few more days.
Well I got back this Saturday and his eye was puffy. I treated him and cleaned his eye in case he got something else in there. Sunday it was even worse, so I called the vet. My vet called me back Monday morning and was out that afternoon.
Thank god my boyfriend had the day off becuase the eye was so bad and the fact there was no gurantee that removeing the eye would help him. The vet felt pretty sure that there really was little to be done. So around 1:30 My Duke was layed to rest.
I miss him greatly. I no longer have those BIG eyes he used to give me when I was feeding him or when I gave him attention.
