I went to bed early about 8:30 because I got up at 3:30 yesterday morning. About 9:15 thereabouts my two little dogs woke me up barking and growling at the window right above my bed. Little Teddie was bouncing on my head trying to jump up there. Then big old Diego and Jerry Lee started in so I jumped up to look and saw two legs walking away. Not running just walking. I figured it was my son-in-law as he was up stairs watching TV. So I just crawled back under my blankets settled the dogs down and went back to sleep. This morning I asked who was out walking around last night at that time. NO ONE! So now I get to deal with the fact that this person entered into my yard thru my fence to get to my house and windows. It was still early it seems in the night at that time but dark out even though there is always a porch light on out there. So now it will be a problem sleeping tonight. I have told them when my little dogs start barking at that time of night they need to look out and even more so if the other two start barking also. Then let their two big dogs out right away. Just let them go and eat who ever is out there.

Wow....not cool. Please be safe, and if the dogs bark again get up and holler out the door that you have called the police or something to that effect. Also, I woul let the local police know you had a prowler, as well as make sure all valuables are locked up if you can. Are you near neighbors or a road? Let others in your area know if you can. And if it were me, I would have a gun in the bedroom, along with the phone. Do you have a auto door locks on your vehicle? You could also honk the panic button if you hear someone out there. Stay safe.........

Marie,

I would lock all the padlocks on the gates outside, well the perimeter ones, then open the other gates and let Bubba have roam tonight. I know its cold and hes getting older, but as long as he is able to go into the woodshed to get warm, he'll be fine. Trust me, they wont mess with Bubba

And should they come into the yard again tonight, it will be much hard trying to outrun an attacking dog and jumping a fence at the same time!

And I like the idea about pressing the panic button on your truck. That will get peoples attention.

Not to worry Alicia (laughingllama75), Marie is always smart about having the gun and phone nearby. This isn't the first experience she's had.

*I've known her for 7 years and am kinda like to second child*

That must of been terrifying! I have had my house broken into 3 times (all different houses). The first time I was home alone when a man entired. He ran out when he saw me. The second time a man was were leaving my house as I was pulling into the driveway. The third time I was not home. It is so scary. I had nightmares for years. Each time I did not own a dog. I was told by police that generally if you own dog(s) they will tend to not entire and go away. Sounds like your dogs did their job! Good for them! Please take all precautions you can. I highly doubt they will come back but be safe anyway.

I am so sorry you experienced this.

Now that is scary!!!

For all women who can be by themselves , and if your local permits, I would highly recommend a .410 shotgun. For one, its small, its for birding, so smaller women can handle it easier than some can a pistol. Two, anyone with an ounce of sense will recognize the sound of chambering a shotgun shell, whereas with a pistol, its just you telling them you have a gun. Also, a shotgun will spread a pattern of shot out and you can easily hip shoot ( my sis has a bad neck, cannot shoot a pistol) and chances are hit something. There are larger shotguns, but the damage is greater all around. I fear that with this economy , home invasion will be going up. Here in TX there have been quite a few, but a few homeowners defended their properties shooting the invaders and it 'seems' that the invasions may be down or at least slowing a bit.

If you do opt for a gun, take a class, go to a gun range and get used to the weapon. Also, train yourself on what steps you WILL take. Make it second nature. Just as you train yourself not to hit the car brakes in a slide, train yourself on how you will react.

Now that is scary, but I am glad you are safe. Just don't understand people.

If you haven't already, call the police and let them know. File a report. That way they know you have had some trouble.

I worry about that here. If I got a couple of dogs would need to build a kennel for them, as they would need to be outside dogs. So have to wait on that.

Right now.. I have DH and assorted guns and we know how to use them.

Stay safe Marie!!

Yes my dogs did good. As for a gun I was a marksman in the Army. I know exactly what I will do and have prepared for that moment. If they come into my home they are not leaving it on their own. As for telling them I have a gun that won't happen. They will know it when they hear it. No warning in my home. But first they have to get thru all the dogs. Two big dogs upstairs. Two big dogs in the garage guarding my door and two little dogs down stairs to sound the alarm and then there is Bubba. Nuff said there. But still it is very scary.

Even with all the "artillery" you've described.......I'd still let the local police know what happened. They may be able to patrol your area more often.......Plus, if (God Forbid) the fellow comes back either onto your property or your neighbor's, the police have things on record.
