Can you register and show half minis?

No, you can not register offspring as a half mini, just the same as breeding an AMHR mini to an AMHA only mini, the offspring is not registerable. There is a pinto registry, and there are CDE (combined driving events) they can be part of.

You may choose to do whatever you want with your mini, horses with great, steady heads on their shoulders make for level headed animals........but if it were me, all i can say is there are so many with papers going dirt cheap, it really isn't cost effective to breed and raise one for the showring or pleasure. Nice horses, with good looks, already the color and gender you want, going cheap, cheap , cheap. Between breeding fees, vet checks, foaling out, more healthy mare and foal checks, possible complications before, during, or after the birth, it can be financially and emotionally draining.

I got my gypsy vanner colt as an in utero purchase, I was still on pins and needles, but it was so much more of a relaxing experience. I personally miss having foals, but am so over the worrying aspect of it all (is the mare okay, the foal, healthy delivery or not, enough colostrum, IgG tests, possible colic, possible impactions, weaning, the list goes on ).

Good luck on whatever you choose. Keep an eye on the forum and the sales board in the coming months, you may find something that melts your heart and you can be part of from the beginning, without having to put your own mare at risk.

There's generally no need to breed an unregistered animal when there are plenty of affordable registered babies around.

You can buy a baby with what you want (gender, color, registration, and personality) without the crapshoot of breeding (or even a dead mare and foal which unfortunately happens).

Lots of horses go to slaughter anyway, so if you can consider rescuing, that would be an amazing way to go, too.

You can always show in open shows, 4H, clinics for minis, state fairs, etc.

You can also do driving CDEs. They don't require registration.

There are lots you can do with an unregistered mini.

Edit: I really don't feel the need to tell you to breed your mare or not. You can do what you want with it. Ultimately it's your decision. However, it is very much a buyers market right now and there are some VERY nice horses being sold dirt cheap.

We have a pet quality mini, that could be hardshipped into AMHA, but she has the old fashioned stock look, so we didn't bother. She was shown by my grand daughter for two years in the open shows and 4-H, and did very well, always coming in at the top, and won several championships, so yes you can still show your fur baby.

There is the NSPPR division if one parent is AMHR and the other not - then you can follow the rules and compete in those classes when offered.
