I have a stallion that gets really dry, itchy skin when he is bathed every week (for shows). I was wondering what kinds of conditioners you use and what works the best to actually keep their hair and skin healthy but not oily. Thanks

You might try adding flax, BOSS or oil to their diet. Dry skin usually comes from inside IMO

If you still want to use a conditioner, I'd look for something with oatmeal. Oatmeal is normally really good for dry skin. There is a conditioner that is for dry skin, but I've only seen it once and can't remember the name anymore.

I prefer flax and/or BOSS rather than oil for mine. I feed my horses 1/4cup of each every day unless they have weight considerations in which case I delete the BOSS. For some horses I will increase the flax but I have never fed more than 1/2 cup and that was for a larger mini. If you would prefer to add oil to your horses grain I advise you to go with corn oil which is closer to their natural diet and start with a tiny bit and work up gradually. To be entirely honest tho I don't know what the best amount to plan for is with oil. Hopefully someone else can give you some pointers on that but I'd guess 1/4cup might be about right there too.

We did a hot oil treatment on our horses at nationals this year for the first time and it did wonders! We just warmed up the water, mixed in a small bottle of baby oil and basically washed the horse with it. Once they were soaked (make sure you get every where) put a cooler on and wait 15 minutes or so. Then go rinse it off with a nice bath. It did wonders and it really restored the color after a fresh clip as well.

I use a special home made recipe that has worked on everything.

We call it pink stuff. And if you want to PM me I would share the exact recipe with you.

Healthy Hair moisturizer is an awesome awesome product. I have had several horses that have allergic reactions to stuff on their skins.

None of my horses will eat the BOSS (Black Oil Sunflower Seeds) Some of them have eaten them in the past for their owners but once they get to my place wont touch them. I dont know if I got a bad bag or something but its never worked for me.

I have also had excellent results with the Hot Oil Treatments. As well as whole flax in my grain.

I think you can try treating your horses skin from both outside and inside. First of all, a good coat conditioning supplement, such as ground flax, black oil sunflower seeds, or a supplement that we like and does an excellent job on the coats and hoof growth is a granule made called Hooflex. The HOoflex coat and hoof supplement is expensive but we had the best results with that, horses just dappled right out. I dont like to use corn oil because it really goes to the neck of the horse and fat content is so much higher, but as far as the coat goes it helps.

Healthy Hair Care is a moisturizer for the coats that you mix with water and spray onto the horses coats. We use this right after washing, conditioning manes and tails, and rinsing them, get excess water off, then spray on the healthy hair care all over the horses body and mane and tail. It really helps to restore the moisture back in. Its sold in a concentrate that you mix with water, goes a long way and is a good product. MOst of the tack shops sell it.

You can use it right after you clip them too for moisturizing the coat, it helps to restore the color in my opinion as well.

A hot oil treatment will also help too. Some horses just naturally have a dryer coat and will take a bit more conditioning to get the maximum results.

When warmer weather arrives you can try letting your horse out when the sun is not on him as much, like early mornings or evenings and nights. That will help as well. Good luck to you. Laura

For those of you who feed the ground/milled flax, how much do you give each horse? I have been adding a tablespoon to each feeding for each horse. I am just curious is this is too much or not enough.

Thanks everyone for your suggestions. I will look into the BOSS and Flax. I already use Healthy hair but since it is cold I havent been able to treat him regularly with it anymore. Now that it is going to start warming up I should be able to treat them with it more...I can't wait for spring

My mini probably weighs 225 around there and I give him 1 tbl spoon of ground flax in the morning and one at night and same with my mare who weighs around 200 and both their coats this winter look really nice. If your feeding 2x's a day sounds like your doing right. TJ
