: He never has done this before. Was breeding about 7 - 10 mares a year.

One mare did not take, last week notice my stallion breeding her. She sure was questionable for awhile.

So now only waiting on one mare and will have only one baby this year, sure hope it is a filly so I can keep her....

We are down to 3 mares and two now have been hand bred for next year.

Waiting on the other mare to foal...

Will be keeping all fillies born in the next 2-3 years...

My foaling season was POOR! I bred 8 mares last year, and the stallion(a new one I had bought last year) settled only 2 for me, and possibly a third, that I sold. This was after breeding over and over again over a few heat seasons! I was NOT impressed, and that boy hit the road! (and yes, I did disclose the reason that he had not settled the mares) I was sooooo disappointed and disgusted!! I have only 2 foals this year now, and both colts.

NEXT year I hope to have a nicer foal crop!

: Keep your fingers crossed for me!

I am so sorry you had an off year. We were fortunate this year. We settled all mares (plus one oops!) and only lost one foal early. All foals were born healthy and MALE except for the last one, finally a filly :aktion033:

We had both a seasoned stallion and a young buck at the job and both did great jobs with their mares. We are giving the old man a year off and letting the young stud strut his stuff for 2008....and maybe we will have better luck with more girls.....

: Of course, as long as they are healthy when they get here, it does not really matter to us.

Oh Mary...it is like a maternity ward around here.

Thanks to a few extras joining the herd

We used 2 new stallions in 2006 (1 proven/1 not)

& have seen good results from the younger man! 5/5 settled!

What I am finding is that mares seem to be foaling 2 wks early

this year....most maidens though.

Hope 2008 is better for you!

Our stallion we bought a couple years ago hasn't had any real trouble with conception rates, but of 8 foals born, 5 of them had underbites, he was gelded on Monday and will start his new career as a driving horse as soon as he heals. We had high hopes for him, such a disappointment. In 25 years of raising 8-10 foals a year, we'd previously only had 2 horses with underbites, and the one gelding grew out of it!

This year we've already lost over half our foal crop for various reasons, but have 1 live, healthy boy and two more still to foal.

But we've had very good luck through the years for the most part, and we're looking forward to next year being better!

Well actually, I just bred my mare today to my now not a virgin stud. Earlier this year I had no idea if he knew he was a boy yet, he wouldnt talk to any of the girls, he had testes but were small, but in the past month or 2 I have noticed that he was finding out how it all works. Well today I noticed that my Appy mare was in, so I put the 2 out together hoping that he would get an idea. It took him 10 minutes and he got it! Im am soo thrilled, as they are both appies and this will be his first, but her second.

Definitely not our best year for conception either! After several years of over 22 foals each year we sold half our herd last year and many were exported. We used 3 virgin stallions last year along with 3 proven stallions and our old guy who was going downhill all last year gradually. I believe every stallion got at least 1 mare pregnant. We have a lot less mares now but "could" have had 22 foals and may end up with a total of 12 foals including one lost in birth. Most didnt get in foal that were with the old stud but several were with the inexperienced studs too. Oh well with Hubbie having major surgery this year its ok to have less for me this year.

I've been lucky so far. My stallion had his first breeding season last year. I pasture bred him to 4 mares and all 4 took. I've got 2 colts so far. The next 2 are due mid-June but the one mare likes to go early....so I expect it in a couple of weeks. Fillies would be nice.

: But as long as their healthy I'm happy! :bgrin My stallion is going to have a short breeding season this year so I may only have 1-2 foals next year. I really want to go to Pinto World and I don't want to have to worry about mares foaling!

We bred three mares last year to a leased stallion who had only had one mare before that. He got two mares in foal on the first try, but the third mare never got in foal. To be fair to the stallion, that third mare has a history of being difficult to get in foal. We had to healthy fillies this year, and they are so similar they could almost be twins!

This year we are using some young stallions that have never bred a mare before, one is 2 and the other is 3. Ozzy, the 3 year old stallion, will be getting two mares (one has already been confirmed in foal to him the other has another week before we can check), the 2 year old stallion got one mare and she goes in on Monday for an ultrasound. Then we sent the pintaloosa mare out to a friend's stallion to be bred as neither one of my boys wanted her

I had success bred 5 mares last year, two outside mares, and three of my own. Used my proven leopard app stallion for 3 mares, and new snowcap stallion for two. The snowcap did very well, one mare he only bred one day, because I got kicked in the knee by the mare during breeding the first day.

All five foaled healthy perfect foals! Two colts and three fillies, the colts were to the outside mares, so I have my mares trained well, LOL!

This year I've only bred one mare so far, and she came back in, so hoping it was just from early cycle.
