Hello all,

I don't post here much anymore, I just wanted to tell other mini people about what happened tonight.

Anyway, I rescued two mares, Polly a ten-year-old mare, and her daughter, Belle, a four-year-old about four months ago. I now have a small herd of six, and let me tell you, there is never a dull moment.

Polly and Belle came to me from a man who could no longer care for them. Polly has had a lot of human interaction, as she can be ridden so she was used for his grandchildren until they outgrew her. Belle has had next to no human interaction.

Both mares were in slight need of a diet, and Polly has foundered extremely badly in the past. I have my suspicions that Belle has too, but the previous owner never said anything.

We got them home, and for about three months they shared a fenceline with my four other horses. The mares' diet was watched, they came down to a healthy weight. Feet were trimmed. The hooves need tons more work though. Now, all six share a large pasture, that is covered in snow right now.

I began to work on trust with them. Polly trusted me easily, she is very sweet-tempered and easy mannered.

Belle on the other hand...

I have caught her a handful of times so we could trim her feet, but that was by sheer luck. She wouldn't let me touch her without flinching. I have worked with her for months, just being outside, giving her scratches behind the ear where she likes them, and talking to her. My movements are always slow, and I found out that if I sing to her, she will calm down.

Tonight something happened. I was petting Blue, and she came up to me and "asked" for a kiss. I was amazed. She has never let me kiss her nose before. She wanted to be touched! I was crouched down, and she rested her head on my shoulder. I just petted her, and sang quietly. Soon, I had all six horses around me, all wanting some love. Generally they get jealous, but tonight, they just let Belle rest there and no other horses interfered.

I am still amazed. I love those horses so much.

Anyone have any idea what color Belle is? Polly is a grulla, has the dorsal stripe and all...Belle has a dorsal stripe as well..

Congrats on winning her trust!!! Doesn't it just make your heart swell when things like that happen?!!? Let's you know know you are doing things right. Bless you for taking these two girls in.

I am not good at color, so I won't even attepmt that!!!

First of all I wanted to say hi from another Minnesota person

I don't know if there is any truth to this, but I think the weather has a factor in her coming to you as well. Here is why. Our show horses during the warmer weather come running to the gate to meet you, be messed with, loved on, or conditioned. They fight over who is going to get their halter on first. During the colder winter months some of them don't want anything to do with me. I have to chase them and corner them if I want to catch them and don't even want their scratches or loving. Now all of sudden this past week when it has been warm, they all have started to come right up to me again and want their attention. Seems like they are telling me, okay I have had my break now I am ready for what is next.

Just an idea.

By looking at the picture I would say that Belle is possibly a buckskin, maybe has the dun gene if she has a dorsal. She could also be a variation of a bay as they can have a dorsal, but looks more buckskin to me. Do you have any pictures of her shedded out?

That is awesome!

I had a rescued mare that acted much like your Belle, except her was about 12-13 years old. Barely halter broke, dont think she'd ever been trailered. It took her months to come around. I hate leaving halters on when my horses are outside, but in her case I made an exception. She lived outside with my weanling colt for the first couple months, it was summertime and they enjoyed the fresh air. At first, I would have to bring the colt in, and recruit help in order to "corral" her into the shelter, where I could clip the lead onto her halter. Soon, this became habit and by the time we were hit with that awful snow storm, she would meet me at the gate to come in. She got rewarded with a treat every night. She had little quirks about her too. Like going out of the barn, she had to walk in front of me (my barn aisle is VERY narrow), but once out the door, she would turn around and walk next to me out to the paddock.

I found her a new home recently, not that I didnt want her, but found someone who would love her just as much as me and who would put just as much time into earning her trust. The day she left, she asked me for a kiss. I about cried. Almost changed my mind, but knew this lady just adored her and was excited to take her home to love on.

They really do touch your hearts.

Hey!

Congratulations! It looks like you might have to wait until you can take some hair off before you can get a true color on that girl. Looks like they have some older hair so hard to tell with winter coats.

Isn't it fun when they decide they want the attention, rather than us try to give them attention they aren't ready for?

What a sweet story...I love it when they want to be loved and kissed!!!!!! I'm going to venture a guess at her being a sooty buckskin w/ dun factor. Very pretty gals

Nice story! Good job. . . . and I love happy endings.

I also find that our weanlings like me to sing to them.

When I am walking into the field to catch them I sing. . . . .

"you're my honey bun, sugar plum, pumpy umpy umpkin, you're my sweetie pie"

I am sure many of you know the tune, anyway they just stand there to let me catch them and halter them, almost like they are in a trance.

Can't help you with colours, but there's lots of experts here that will.

Aren't those soul-opening moments amazing? It sounds like the rest of your herd knew what a big deal that was and decided to magnanimously share you.

Thank you for letting us share that with you!

What a wonderful moment. Thanks for sharing, made me tear up. Sounds like you are definitely getting through to her.

Thanks for the wonderful replies everyone...I appreciate the kind words.

Echo Acres - I never even thought that the weather might have something to do with it! That is interesting. That rightly could be so, because my little female cat, who hardly ever wants human attention rubbed on my legs until I picked her up, and then began to purr away.

I have no pictures of her shedded out, I will get those come spring though!
