As of today all my hard work in looking for good homes for my non-appies, and finding a refined, arabian snowcap appaloosa stud, is finally happening! My gelding is going to a great home with a NEWMHC member, look for him at the Shawano shows! And my pinto filly is going to a great new home in AR in trade for this amazing, flashy snowcap colt!

He is a real tail flagger with an amazing trot, as soon as he arrives (hopefully in March) i'll get some new action shots of him, the video I received was amazing!

Everyone meet Mini-Go-Round's Orion Starchaser! All appy bred and showing all characteristics of being homozygous, refined, and a sweetheart!

As a foal - here you can really see his blanket!

Here's a great headshot of him last summer, see how tiny his nose is and how mottled!

And here he is now in winter woolies!

He has an extensive appy background, I can't wait to show him, look for him and my appy filly at the Shawano shows!

Thanks for letting me share!

congrats!! im really happy for you and can feel your excitement. Looks like he is a true grey that is turning white?? Is that what color he is?

Kay

Looks like you have found a winner he is beautiful. Good Luck in the show ring.

I had thought the same thing originally, a grey turning white, but I asked the question and sent photo's into "The Appaloosa Project" and they responded that his turning white so quickly is not the greying gene, it's the roaning gene commonly associated as an appaloosa color characteristic =) He is really a silver dapple with white hairs coming through (appaloosa characteristic) making him appear white. In his winter coat you can see the light dappling is still there!

Thanks for the compliments!!

hmmm i would agree if his mane stayed silver. NOrmally appy roaning wont turn a mane white but i know the grey gene will. This is why appys are so hard to tell. So many breeders put down silver dapple on papers when they are grey or visa versa. Hes a cutie!

Actually, in all my experience the appy gene can, and will turn the mane white especially if the hair surrounding the follicles of the mane and tail are white. My appy filly was born sorrel with a sorrel mane and tail and just white flakes on her rump, she is now a full leopard with a white mane and tail! There's a great photo somewhere of a bay appy with white spots growing near the mane turning those sections of the mane white...i'll look it up!

Thanks!! I am so excited! Will be a 12 hour drive there, and a 12 hour drive home...ack! Anyone ever drive so much for a horse before?

Here's the photo of an appy showing how the hair folicles are effected by white hairs that grow in near the mane and tail:

Hope this helps a little and doesn't confuse!

Congradulations!!!! He looks like a very nice Silver Dapple Appy to me, even in his winter wooly's.

I'm a big fan of the Orion line, especially Orion Appys.

Good luck in the show ring!

Thank you! He has such a great neck and head, I am planning to put him in halter classes and color this year - my first year showing so i'm going to start off with the easier classes...hopefully halter wont be too hard lol!

I thought he looked familiar, LOL. I am on The Appaloosa Project group myself and read Shiela's response to your quetsion, that lady definately knows what she is talking about!!!She is very thorough in her answers and takes alot of time meticulously going through all pictures before she gives an answer. Congrats he is a beauty.

Ohhh that is wonderful you're a part of the group as well! I have been keeping a keen eye on your new little few spot filly

: she is gorgeous! Let me know if you ever want her to live with me! =) Or you know, just let me know whenever you get a great foal out of her that you want to send my way, either works lol!

I know Shiela definately knows her appaloosa characteristics, I trust her fully with any question!!

It will be interesting to see who is right!!

Just remember it is still possible for him to be Grey + Silver+ Snowcap!!!

IMO the Appy gene does not do that to the mane and tail until the animal is two or so, not as a foal, but there you go.

He is very cute.

Anyone know how the grey gene works? Do one of the parents HAVE to carry the grey gene for the foal to get it or can the foal get it from a grandparent or further down the line?

Sorry, I know how the grey gene works but MiniLocoSinclair he is just adorable!!!

I LOVE those little appys!!

Congratulations on a super nice fellow and good luck in the show ring!!

My semi-leopard looked like he only had a blanket in his foal pics (dark mane and tail)...a few months later he looked like a leopard--with the mostly white mane/tail. We also had a few big apps like that over the years growing up. One of those was a semi-leopard and the others were varnish (which CAN affect the mane/tail) along with frosting or blankets. I know for a fact none of ours ever greyed--any of the old-time app breeders will tell you to steer far clear of ANYthing with grey genes! My grandfather and uncle were breeding apps before my mother was even born. The one thing I know for sure is that with appies dang near anything is possible! Of course is there is a grey gene in there it can always sneak up too...

Congrats on a GORGEOUS new colt!!!

oooooooooooooo!!!! He is going to be absolutly stunning!! And, yes, one parent has to be grey for the offspring to be grey. He looks silver dapple to me..and the white mane and tail are what are supposed to be there with a silver dapple..right? lol! (please note avatar picture of a silver black appy. Your boy is really light now, but, Sheila is right...many Appies roan out to "grey" . It is not a true grey..it is Appy roan.

My black Appy filly had her tail fall out last year, as a yearling, and it is coming in white..it's an Appy thing...don't cha just love it??? lol!!

I do hope that he isn't grey. Oh! And, CONGRATULATIONS!!!!

This is what Shiela wrote to me from the Appaloosa Project, she knows everything about appaloosa gene's - here's her response to my question of whether he looks homozygous from his characteristics, AND if he looks as if he is greying:

Hi Steffanie!

I have spent some time looking at your colt and his parents, and as

near as I can tell, he fits the physical description of a horse that

is potentially homozygous for LP in dominant form. He also has two

LP-carrying parents (spotted, genotype LP/lp), so he had a 25% chance

of inheriting a dominant copy from each. Since we cannot yet offer

you the opportunity to DNA test him for LP, we have to go by this

information, and test breeding, if you are thinking of using him as a

stallion. Crossing him to a minimum of 10 non-LP-carrying mares

would give you a pretty clear idea of what he's carrying. If all 10

came out showing at least LP-caused traits (white sclera, striped

hooves, mottled skin and LP-style roan patterning), you'd know he's

almost certainly homozygous for LP - flipping the coin that way ten

times in a row is very hard for even the luckiest horse to do!

> And if he was born such a silver color and not even a year later he

clips out as looking pure white, is that the greying gene?

I don't see any signs of greying in either parent, nor in him. I

suspect that he's hinting to us he's homozygous for LP. It's common

for LP/LP horses tend to develop LP-caused roaning more quickly that

horses that are only heterozygous for LP.

Hope this helps!

Sheila Archer

I honestly doubt he has a greying gene, even in his foal photo's he shows no hint of white around his nose or features which the greying gene often shows. I too heard to stay away from the grey gene in an appaloosa and his pedigree has no grey horses in it, so I truly think he's just a super light silver dapple! =)

A parent has to be Grey, Grey is a simple dominant. BUT Grey can lurk in Roan and Appy quite successfully- I have had people tell me a greyed out App is a "fewspot" and were quite serious about it- she has to be as she started as a Leopard and is now white
default_rolleyes.gif
:

Roan ( true Roan not Appy "roan") also seems to slow down the Greying process in the same way that Silver seems to speed it up, so Grey can lurk for some years in Roan, by which time the owner is used to seeing a Roan and the fact that his head has now "roaned" passes unnoticed. I have seen a lot of "dodgy" colours claimed on websites that you would have thought would have known better.

Anyway, there is nothing that anyone can do about colour or pattern, that is for sure. So long as you are happy with the horse beneath the colour there is not problem.
