I work at a Veterinary Clinic and we treat dogs, cats, and occasionally exotic small animals.

I just wanted to bring this to attention and as a reminder to hopefully prevent this from happening to someone else. Once again we had another dog come in that had accidentally been run over by one of it's owners. The dog was sleeping under the truck tire because of the shade and didn't move when the truck was started, this poor young lady ran right over the dog's back legs/hips, abdomen, chest, and lastly the head. Fortunately his was a retriever and a pretty large one so he was still alive, if this had been a small dog it would have been dead on the spot. The dog had some head trauma and a broken leg but other than that seemed to be okay. This seems to happen a lot especially during the summer because the dogs are looking for shade and it can easliy be found under a car. So please everytime before you leave in your car check under the car and around the car to make sure no animals are under (or near) the car. It's always really horrible when someone runs over their own pet, the guilt is the worst, since it could have been prevented so easily. So before you go rushing off to work or wherever don't forget to look under your car!

thanks for the reminder.... we have a house dog that is rarly out of our site , but for those that let their dogs roam freely ...it is excellent to remind them of this , and for cats too. I cant imagine the guilt that would go along with this for the rest of your life.

Paranoid here--each & every time I start a vehicle I look under the hood first, just to make sure that there isn't a cat under there. Our cats don't very often get up under the hood (out of the thousands of times I've checked, only once have I found a cat there!) but by checking every time I know there isn't one there. Then I start the truck, then hang out the door upside down to look underneath--and have already looked around the vehicle before I get in--I am absolutely not going to run over one of the pets if I can help it.

It takes so little time to LOOK before I start the truck & drive away.

I make sure that our pets aren't even allowed anywhere near a vehicle. A few years back, my elderly neighbor backed over his doberman with his truck, and unfortunately, the dog was killed. The dog was almost deaf due to age, and never heard the truck door close or the start of the engine.

We don't have such a problem with the cars, but I have run over a couple of cats with the golf cart. They sleep under it, it's quiet and they just don't move. I'm constantly having to dodge them coming through the barn - had one fall off the back of the cart and somehow fell under a tire....she's okay but there was some trauma. Fortunately it doesn't weigh what a car or truck does.
