 Rhino shots are very important... it really disturbs me that people are afraid of giving them and tell others not to.

I'm really sorry for your loss.

Oh Kay,

I am so very sorry. Hugs and prayers for you and for your 3 precious mares - Tiny, Moonlight Bay and Dancer. I always feel so bad for the mares - they come to a person for help and there is nothing we can do. It is so very heartbreaking.

what would i do without all of you. it does help knowing you guys know how heartbroke i am. all 3 foals were just so beautiful and exactly what I have spent years building tword breeding.

My heart breaks for dancer. Everytime i check her she gets all excited thinking I am bringing her her baby. so everytime i check her I come out crying again. The other two were maiden so didnt understand what they had lost. I did let her stay with the foal for awhile but she kept trying so hard to make it get up that she was going to tear the foal up. Physically I think shes doing very well. Contractions have stopped and shes eating well.

I do think that was the last bred mare except for Bailey. Im praying so hard that Bailey foals and everything is fine. shes at day 334. Still doesnt look like foaling is close yet. If you could all just think some positive thoughts for bailey id really appreciate it. And I am so thankful for Flirts beautiful filly *tease* that she gave me.

I keep trying to look at the positive but its getting so hard

I am just so heartbroken for you and Dancer. I will be praying sooooo hard for Bailey. Dad says he sends you his best wishes.

Really was hoping this would be your season! This makes me so sad to hear.

So sorry for your great losses Kaykay there are just not words to help except we all are pulling for your last mare to foal a healthy filly for you real soon.

We do give Rhino shots 5,7,9 and have had no problems with the shots except we have 2 mares that are a little leg stiff the next day which goes away within 24 hrs, our vet recommends the shots for pregnant mares, it makes me a little nervous doing them but it makes me more nervous not doing them.

So far we have been good with the shots

I am so very sorry for your losses! How heart-wrenching! I am hoping and praying so hard Bailey gives you the foal of your dreams.

oh kay im so sorry for your losses ,you must be be going through the mangle, its so very sad

I'm so sorry Kay. I don't know how I would feel if I had that happen 2 years in a row.....would make me think about breeding again! I'm praying for Bailey to have a wonderful foal for you. I'm sorry Dancer is having such a hard time. Do you have a previous foal from her.......my friend had a mare that lost it's foal and was distraught and she put her previous years foal back in with her and she did better.

Kay I can so relate to the utter devisation you feel. I lost both foals we expected this year. Both were our first foals from our stallion and both fillies. I was ready to throw in the towel that night. Hang in there!

Oh KAY!!!

What can I say??

I have never given Rhino shots- it is not something that has been done here, ever, so not something I do.

I have had a year like yours , though, and that was not Rhino, either (I did have the placentas tested and like Minimor, I do believe it is only the placenta that needs testing)

Everytime we have something like this happen we all feel "I can't take anymore"

BUT if we did not feel this then, IMO, we should not be breeders.

The day I can bury a foal without crying is the day I give up breeding.

This too will pass, love, and life will go on.

Hi Kay,

We have never had a problem giving Rhino injections or worming during pregnancy. Rhino is not a very great vaccine as it only last a short period of time. We give all the horses a 5 way injection yearly as well as a month before they foal.

Contaminated hay or feed could also be the cause of the abortions.

We have had mares foal as early as 284 days and have live foals here. There are other breeders that have had the same experience, but you need to have the mare in a stall and be there for her.

I know what you are going through. Just reading your note brings back those that have not made it. The term ones really get to me, and like others have mentioned, you feel like quitting. It is looking around the paddocks and seeing the live ones that keeps you going.

I have yet to have a necropsy show Rhino, so we have given up on doing them. We would have no problem giving Rhino to any remaining mares you have pregnant just in case.

To loose three is just beyond heartbreaking. Please contact me if I can be of further help.

I am sorry for your loss.

Lee's maiden shetland aborted hers about a month early also. Don't know why! He was looking forward to showing the mare & foal ( bay filly) & had them entered in the futurities. Now he only has one shetland filly to show this year & showing is what he loves to do. It has been years since we lost one by abortion. I quit my job to stay home to watch the mares closely but some things you just cannot prevent - frustrating- not knowing!

I am so sorry Kay, I know that you are heartbroken, for sure! When I am thinking about the type of program I want to follow for my horses, I look to the big Thoroughbred farms who have horses worth millions of dollars. Believe me, they give Pneumobort (sp?). I always give it to the mare at the specified intervals.

My vet recommends it, and I really don't believe they recommend it just so they can get extra bucks from me. They get enough as it is, lol. But they have vaccinations they do NOT recommend giving, like Strangles. You have to pretty much insist on it, if you want it. I have never gone against my vet recommendation.

Oh no Kay soooooo sorry! Sounds like my last year, two dead fillies and mares and then Carbon and Bailey were empty..... This year 5 are ultrasounded and palpated and all past the 4 month mark. Hyacinth is at 323 days now, Carbon is due end of June beginning of July, Shirley and Abby are due in august and Bailey not till October. That was a surprise. I m not rejoicing till there are 5 foals out of the ovens..... Been excited before and had nothing to show for it.

As I just lost my only foal of the year on Thursday, I know exactly how you feel. I am so sorry. I too have thought "Why do I keep doing this?" But when you get a live baby it makes it all worth while. Again I am sorry just enjoy the live babies you do have.

Kay, I'm sorry - nothing more frustrating and heartbreaking. A friend here locally has also lost 2 to late term abortions this year, no visible sign of anything wrong with the foals.

I do give Pneumabort-K, every vet I've ever talked to has recommended it strongly. I usually give just 5-7, and skip the 9th month. Have never to date had a problem with it.

Hope the rest of your year improves, and your last mare has a great one.

Jan
