Hi Kay.. We usually average 2-3 late term abortions every year.. I wouldnt be concerned about Rhino, unless it was more than our "normal". Many are twisted chords.. some are just aborted with no apparent reason.. This year we have had no losses... so I am concerned about that!!! LOL>>>>

Yes, it does get very disappointing when you try so hard to do all the right things.. I gave up trying to figure out why... my money is gone and doesnt change the outcome.. I try to tell myself.. Thats Farming..

We gotta go forward.. Best of Luck with the rest of the season..

Kay did you have a necropsy done on the foal? Did they examine the intestinal tract?

Kay,

I'm so sorry for your loss. Unfortunately, the science of breeding can be a very painful process for us humans who have so many high hopes for the resulting foals. But nature has a way of weeding out the culls before they are even born. Foals may appear healthy on the outside, but there was something there that caused an abortion. Be thankful it was a quick ending instead of several thousands of dollars spent on an ill foal. I know its tough, but not all are meant to be it seems.

Just so you know, I give Rhino vaccines. In fact, I probably vaccinate more than I should. I believe in vaccines and know that they prevent disease. I consider it an ounce of prevention. Of course, you can do it all by the books and still have the same outcome. Just honestly never know.

As much as this disappoints you, try to find the silver lining in it. There is always a silver lining if you choose to look for it.

Kay, so sorry....

We did an experiment last year. We did 1/2 mares with Rhino, 1/2 not. 4 mares due.

1 aborted early-no rhino shot (twisted cord).

1 aborted early the next day- got the rhino shot.-no visible sign of why.

1 had a healthy foal- got the shot.

1 had a healthy foal-did not get the shot.

Not exactly scientific but honestly about what I expected. I probably would have lost 50% anyway. This year, we decided no Rhino shots. So far, lost 1 foal, 3 born healthy. 3 more to go. We will see how it plays out.

Dang it kay, I am so sorry!!!! How totally frustrating! I had a mare abort on Xmas Eve for what appeared to be no apparent reason. Still have not figured that one out. Then had a healthy filly last month and waiting on #3 which will be due soon.

Hang in there. Some years are just tough ones. Hugs to you!

I am so sorry about the losses, it can be so frustrating. I do not know what type of hay you are feeding but feeding fescue hay can cause late term abortions and also cause the mares not to milk well, even if there is a small amount in the hay, just a thought

I'm so sorry Kay ~HUGS~ Have you checked your hay for nitrates? I hope the rest come healthy and fine and next year is a better year !

I am so sorry, kaykay.

((hugs))

I'm so sorry for all your losses Kay. {{{HUGS}}}

I'm sorry to hear about your loses. Last year a friend had a late term abortion. Their vet thinks it might have been from fescue. Even thou all the other horses foaled ok. He felt this mare might have been more sensative to it for some reason. I don't know enough about it honestly, but it might be worth checking into.
