Been looking around at the minature horses and notice different varities of coat colors other than the large breeds. What is black bay? Silver bay? Is there a color chart some where ?

There actually aren't any colors completely unique to miniatures just some that are more common than in the big horse population (such as the silver gene you mentioned). This tends to lead to confusion to many people who are not used to seeing the colors that show up in miniatures, but it also leads to a lot of beautifully colored horses that people really enjoy. I did not read through all the details on this site but it looks like it might be a good source for descriptions. Unfortunately it lacks pictures: horsecolor.com I don't know what's happened to my favorite site on horse color. It seems to be nonexistent at the moment.

One of the problems with Mini "colours" (there are only two colours in any type or breed of horse, Black and Red [chestnut] everything else is a modifier or a dilute of those two basic colours, or a pattern.) is that different things express differently in different breeds.

Thus we have found that Smoky Black (Black with Cream) often but by no means always, shows up in Minis as a sort of dark coffee colour, and that Silver, unless it is inhibited by Cream, shows up with a much paler mane and tail in Minis, whilst in some BH breeds it hardly shows at all, and has to be tested for, thus making people believe it is "rarer".

The Miniature Horse has also become a real "melting pot" of patterns , modifiers and dilute, everything being crossed with everything else, until we do seem to have an absolute "rainbow" of horses!!!

Very nice web stite. I noticed that the site Equine Colors is not available any longer or is there another web site for it?

I'd suggest the book "Miniature Horses: Their Care, Breeding and Coat Colors" by Barbara Naviaux. It's out of print, but I got my copy from Ebay. It has a whole chapter on coat color, including 70+ color photos of coat colors in the back of the book. Also, it's the best all around book I've found on minis--an absloute MUST read!!!
