We subscribe to Netflix for my mom. She doesn't have a computer, so I try to choose movies for her. She likes movies set in rural areas circa 1930's-40's, as she likes to see the clothes, cars, and country people. Can anyone suggest movies that might fit that genre?

I think she's seen all the cowboy movies and all the war movies. I don't think she cares for the old gangster ones.

I'd really like to order movies she would enjoy but I'm running out of ideas.

How about " fried green tomatoes" and the movie "the help?"

The Sound of Music

Miracle of the White Stallions

That's so sweet you are doing this - I'll bet she appreciates it! How about:

Big Fish

On Golden Pond

Forrest Gump

Steel Magnolias

Driving Miss Daisy

Trip to Bountiful

She liked driving miss daisy. I'll check out steel magnolias and trip to bountiful. I've never seen those.

We've been subscribing for over 2 years, and even though she only gets one at a time it's amazing how many movies she can go through.

Thanks so much for the ideas! The nice thing about the newer movies is they have closed captioning.

Anyone have ornery mothers? If she gets a couple in a row that she doesn't like she tells me to cancel the subscription. I don't pay any attention to her, and then she gets a couple she likes and is glad to have them.

If you go with "Steel Magnolias" make sure to get the 1989 version iwth Julia Roberts, Olympia Dukakis, Sally Field, and Dolly Parton. They've did a remake in 2012 with Queen Latifah, Phylicia Rashad and Alfe Woodard, I've only seen part of it, so far; but personally the original was much better (the remake is ok, but the original is better).

A lot of these span from the 1920s-1960s.

The Secret Life of Bees

Dirty Dancing

Grease

The Notebook

Shawshank Redemption

Divine Secrets of the Yaya Sisterhood

The Green Mile

Empire of the Sun

Mermaids

Water For Elephants

Pearl Harbor

Titanic

Places of the Heart

Indiana Jones

The Mummy/The Mummy Returns

The Adventures of Natty Gann

If you can get the Anne Of Green Gables/Anne Of Avonlea miniseries (with Megan Follows), and the spin off series Avonlea (with Sarah Polly), those are great shows!

Some good suggestions!

I was happy to see that some of the Anne episodes are available as dvds on netflix for my mom. I find that many movies she would enjoy are only available on streaming. Not only does she have no computer, she doesn't even have cable or rabbit ears. Netflix is the only tv viewing she has.

She is a voracious reader.

We all tried to get her to use a computer/laptop/kindle but she wouldn't bother. Another sister tried to subscribe her to cable but she threw a fit, so canceled it. Did I mention that she is ornery?
