I have a dwarf my vet asked if I would adopt from another client of his, he's about 10. Fast forward to last week and his eye was weepy from the flies (hes one who will remove his fly mask!) and it started to get goopy so I have been flushing it out twice a day with opticlear as I have done in the past. I found a smaller fly mask that fits better and was proud of myself as he had not removed this one! AH HA! Well On monday morning when I went to flush his eye it was goopy and bloody. Called the vet and he said he would leave an antibiotic ointment at the clinic and be out tomorrow (today) to check it. Well bad news. He has puntured his globe and might lose his eye. He is on three ointments, banamine, and an oral antibiotic and the vet will be back Thursday to re-evaluate. Even the Doctor said these guys can hurt themselves on anything but I feel horrible as I am sure he was trying to remove the smaller mask and was rubbing his face on something! I dont see how I could have done it different -it was for his own good to wear the mask-but still I feel so guilty that I caused it. Sorry-Had to poor my guts out to someone and DH doesn't get it! Thanks for listening..or reading.

i know how you feel, we are dealing with an eye injury here as well, so far it looks like it may actually be ok, the drops stopped the yellow drainage (infection?), then it wept for a while but now has stopped that, was milky through the whole brown part but now brown again around the outside although still "raw" in the middle where it was scratched, and the best news is that although initially there was no reaction to movement (no sight!), now she is reacting to movement :aktion033:

we had planted trees to shade part of the pen, and had put wire around to protect the tree from the minis eating it. apparently someone has been playing with the wire because after we found the injury and went looking, we discovered the wire has been broken and bent in places and that is the only thing we found that could have done the injury... i am so upset that we didn't notice it BEFORE someone got hurt! the wire has been removed and rigid pole fence panels installed, makes a little less room for the herd but no more wire. gosh these little ones can tear apart stuff can't they? i would have never thought they could pull the wire apart that way.

i hope that things turn out well for your little guy and try not to feel too bad, we do what we can with what we have and despite our best efforts, they still manage to get themselves in trouble...

I'm sorry your little guy is going through that, but you can't beat yourself up! First of all you don't know for sure that rubbing of the fly mask caused this. Secondly, a ton of us would have done the same thing by putting a mask on him trying to protect him from the fly and irritants.

You're doing your best to do right by him and that's what is important!

I am so sorry. I have an eye issue too. How do you actually flush th eye. I try doing that and it doesnt work that well.

I also have been dealing with an eye injury, a foal somehow was poked in the eye. Vet said it was thru 2 layers, and if didn't heal he could lose his eye. I had to put an ontment in his eye twice a day, and keep him out of the sunlight...it looked worse before it looked better as with most wounds......now he just has a small white spot..which will go awaya in time. So, he is going to be fine and I bet your little guy will be also. Did your vet tell you to keep him out of the sun? Mine said it would irritate it, he and his mom had to stay in the barn during the day for 2 weeks.

Good luck!

Thanks guys! I knew you all would make me feel better!

Hope the eye is looking better!! You may want to take your horse to see an opthamologist. The eyes really are a specialty and they may suggest a different course of treatment to help save the eye. My mare had a corneal ulcer that my vet treated for two weeks with antibiotics and it just wouldn't get better. Went to see the opthamologist, she changed the drugs completely, and within days it was much better. She told me a week later when re-checking the eye that I was lucky the mare didn't lose it. Good luck.

im so sorry , but as parmela said you were only doing your best, it was an accident, it can happen to the best of us...good luck

I hope your little one will be okay. Like others have said, we do our best and sometimes these little guys are one step ahead of us!

Sending healing thoughts and prayers that the eye will be saved.

UPDATE

Vet was out and VERY pleased with his progress. Looks like he will keep his eye! :aktion033: :aktion033:

He is and will be blind in that one eye, but he still has one good one left. We are VERY happy!!! He gets to have a friend in his stall starting today and can now go outside (nighttime only though).

Thanks for your encouragement!

yippee :aktion033: yippeee :aktion033: That is fantastic news!! Can we see a picture of this little fella?

I had the opposite happen - had a mare that always took her fly mask off, so I left it off of her. She got so irritated with the flies that she rubbed her eye on the fence until it ripped her eyelid nearly off

. So don't be too hard on yourself, without a crystal ball you just never know what these little guys will do.
