Hope ya'll enjoy this picture I took this afternoon. It was cloudy and wasn't sure if I could take a decent picture with my kinda new digital camera(it was a free gift from my employer for 5 yrs service)

Anyway, the pally looking is Cowboy, 13 yr gelding and the silver dapple mare is almost 2 yr old Liberty.

What a beautiful picture! The horses look so contented and the azeleas are wonderful!

thank you for sharing

That sure is a beautiful picture! It makes me miss all of our pretty Azaleas. We had to dig them all up a few years ago and it almost physically hurt! I had noticed some of the younger horses nibbling on them so thought I better check it out. Sure enough they were poisonous to horses.

Lovely but looks like the middle of summer for me.

Debi!

Thanks so much for the heads up on azalea poisoning to horses! I had not seen them on the list. I'll go re check it; but we've been here 7 years and no problems; but I'm certainly going to watch it.

Do you know if it's the leaves or blooms that are bad?

I have gotten some information, cd and book from Texas A & M on poison plants to horses; I better go back and look at the info again. Some plants are poisoness only during certain events; like drought, freeze, etc. For instance, I think it's Johnson grass that is only poisoness during a drought; but I'll have to re check.

thanks again and I"m so sorry you had to dig up the beautiful plants; but our horses safety is always first.

happy trails,

kd

Hi, KD! I think it was the leaves that hurt them. What started it with me was during the same time I had a colt sick. We ended up losing him from kidney/liver failure. I was researching everything and found the Azaleas with the damage they could cause. That just struck a cord with me as it was similiar to Comanche's condition.

We also had planted a pretty row of Oleander in the late 80s. When we extended a fence line close enough for their leaves to blow in that had to go! In the early 2000s we enclosed the acre yard itself for PG mares to graze during the day and my flower beds had to go with all my Lantanas and such.

What a pretty picture! I don't think our flowers. Reminds me Spring is just around the corner here!

Definitely poisonous- beautiful but deadly. We have Rhododendrons that are related but later flowering, also poisonous. Luckily they have not encroached on my property. I love them, they are gorgeous, but I would not have my horses any where near them. The dried leaves are the worst as they are still poisonous ands quite edible.
