I haven't experienced a shortage here either. I purchase all my shavings from the feed store for $4.35 per bag when purchasing 10 or more bags. I love the quality, I find the shavings from TSC to be to dusty and fine.

Sheryll, there is a lumber mill in Jamestown, TN that has bagged shavings..you might try going there. We use to cross the mountain to get the shavings from there. My shavings supplier just went up on prices because they said one of the main shaving supply mills had burned and caused a major shortage.

Judy,

According to Yahoo maps, Jamestown is 60 miles from me. So far I am very pleased with the shavings I received from the local mill here. I think I am just going to continue to buy from them when I need shavings.

I think its kind of interesting to how some TSCs say its a Nation wide shortage, one said a trucking problem, etc.

As far as a shortage in shavings there definately are fewer on the market for many reasons. With the slow down in home building, sawmill production is way down on the whole. Also in many areas there has been a big increase in wood pellet production. This uses sawdust and sometimes shavings. With rise in heating oil and gas prices rising the government thought it would be nice to help businesses utilize these waste products, that were going to waste (obviously the gov. doesn't know much) and make pellet fuel.

As for TSC I can imagine it would be hard for them to stay supplied. If you look at how difficult it is to become a vendor for them you would never attempt it.

Getting bulk sawdust and shavings at the mills here has been tough all winter. Bagged shavings are availible but cost has go up. $3.50-$4.00 at most stores. I thought $2.50 was over priced years ago.

We are having the same problem here in Oregon, My feed store got in some really, really nice white

shavings from Canada and I love them. I bought 10 bags but now I'm going back for 10 more. They

are extremely packed in bag and fluff up huge. I'm very impressed and they are even great for the

piggy who lives in the apartment below. Just kidding my piggy his apartment. I do not like cedar, I'm allergic to it and it always seems dusty and doesn't hold up near as well.

I was told the same thing by my TSC store when I went to get shavings for the horse trailer! They wanted to sell me the pellets which I would normally buy for the stalls, but not the trailer! I don't know what we're all going to do! First it was the fuel to truck the feed, then it was the drought so no hay, and now we can't even get shavings? Luckily, my feed store isn't experiencing the shaving dilema so I was still able to get my shavings.

: I wonder how truthful TSC is sometimes and I don't appreciate the scare tactics! :new_shocked: It's almost worth to buy several acres and grow your own! Like any of us have the time.
