Hi folks,

As some of you may know, I have a new mini mare--(my second mini). She came from a home where things weren't quite up to snuff, so to speak. I give this this owner credit, as SHE made the decision to let her mini go to a new home.

Here is where the advice is needed. The SPCA from what I have heard--has a file on this horse, and was going to take action yesterday. I had no prior knowledge about the file until I came to get the horse, and about an hour after we picked her up, the SPCA showed up on this lady's property wondering where the horse went. I received a phone call about an hour after I had her home here with the 'low-down'. I heard the SPCA guy freaked out on this woman, asking where the horse went,,etc.

My big burning question is--Do I contact the SPCA myself, and say come out and see where she is now, and what veterinary care she will get from my vet-Colleen Kramer. I think for my own piece of mind to call/email them--and my vet. I have a great little setup here with the right feed/hoof care/vet care. I also have an excellent farrier who is great with minis.

Sweet Pea has been dewormed as of today, and I did notice that she is thin--(can feel her backbone and hips), so she is on a timothy/alfalfa mix, and i'm happy to say that she hasn't stopped eating. She has started to lunge at me though--(kinda scary), but I had a riding crop in my back pocket, and all it took was to extend and touch her chest with it, and she backed off---although she still tries to show dominance--naughty/saucy girl,,

I'll be taking all new pictures of "SweetPea", as I have her brushed out/dreadlocks gone from her mane and tail. I will also be taking pictures of my barn/stall/hay area--etc, as evidence of a good home for this little horse.

Any Advice?--

--Oh--and here are another few pictures from yesterday of the little girl when she arrived here:

Any advice at all on what I should do in this situation?

It would probably bug the heck outta me till I called and let them know. Hopefully then you and the spca agent will sleep easier. The Agent may have really been anxious to get the horse in a better place and now worried what really happened to her.

I'm so happy she has found a good home. And I hope she appreciates it soon and stop threatening you. Maybe she's a little food aggressive if she hasn't been getting the proper care.

THank you for saving her

Jbrat,

You have hit the nail on the head. I feel she is food aggressive, and for a good reason as she wasn't getting quite what she needed. I made the mistake of hand feeding a horse cookie here and there, and that made her pushy right away. It's buckets with treats from now on==NO HAND FEEDING.

I'll call the SPCA office in the morning, but will also send them an email with pictures. I would be more than happy to have them come out and see my setup. I just hope that think it's so nice, that they want to keep more horses here

I wish we could rescue them all.

Best wishes with your new girl!

Let me know what SPCA has to say.

We've been a similar situation with BIG horses.........but we've been involved with our local humane society as a short term rescue farm in the past.........so they knew us (or at least had us on file).

As soon as we realized that the SPCA was involved with the horses we had taken in as "boarders", we called them! We told them we wanted to make sure that they knew the owner wasn't "hiding" her horses from them and we would not be a part of something like that. (The issue was not about neglect, but about her having too many animals on the amount of land she had. All of her horses were in good shape.)

The SPCA office appreciated the call and documented everything..........They never came out. I think they wanted to be able to "close the file".........and that's probably what your situation is too.

This little horse was kept in an about the same area as a house trailer would fit. Her fence was 8 foot or so vertical boards that made up a 'privacy fence'. This little horse did have a three and a half sided shelter. and she looked to be in decent shape when I came upon her. The only thing I was concerned at the moment about was her water--which was frozen, and the rope halter on her.

She loaded in the truck fine, and it was mentioned on that property that I would get ahold of the SPCA concerning this horse. The woman was in tears, and I can't stand to see a person hurt like that. She hurt for the better of this horse, and she cried not only because she was sad it was leaving, but for that noble decision she made.

I do have to say---to Francie--(((HUGS))). If you read this:---- I understand.

I'm sorry, for the lady who had to give her up. And I respect her for doing the right thing even if it was hard. She put the horses best interest in mind.

Thank you for taking her in and thank you to the owner for knowing she needed a different environment. Hugs to everyone involved.
