Welcome to the forum,......

It's so nice to see some new people from WA joining in.......... you will get totally addicted to the minis and this forum....and yes, like others have mentioned, it's hard to own just one mini!

Congrats, your little mare is lovely and it is going to be like unwrapping a present when you clip her!!

Love the big horse too.......lovely color/pattern.

Valerie
Thanks. The big girl is a love. She's been through a lot and has earned her retirement with me. My little girl has quickly moved into my heart. I see you are in Olympia! So close.

Welcome from Downunder. I only recently discovered this forum myself. The best place to be.

Interesting all this talk of rusty horses, webbed feet, moss, algae and the drowned rat look. Sounds like you get a bit of rain there.

. Does it snow there too?

Just be very careful with these minis. My first one was given to me and now, for my sins, I have 19.............. Won't somebody stop me!!!!!

Beware, this could happen to you too.

LOL... why yes, we do get a bit of snow... but it usually quickly melts and just makes more WET!

Funny you should mention the warning... hee hee. I'm going to look at a gelding tomorrow.

Anyone keep mixed herds? I have had some mare/gelding groups work great but recently had a bad experience with a gelding.

It all depends on the individuals, for years I kept mixed herd of my full-size horses (except in a couple of boarding situations that separated mares and geldings) without problems. Until recently I had mini mares and stallions so kept them separate for obvious reasons; then, I was given a mini gelding and the only place I had for him was with the mares and it seemed to work fine. Now, we are rearranging again; one stallion will be gelded and provided they get along, the gelding and soon to be gelding will pasture together. [They are side-by-side now and that seems to be working, stallion will be gelded in the spring.]

I have about equal numbers of mares and geldings and have no problems. Top of the pecking order is a gelding Humphrey. He's a tease, a tormentor and a joker but not a nasty bone in his body. Next is a mare Fifi, who is much more volatile lady. Basically they all rub along together pretty well. It's not uncommon to see all of them crammed in under the shelter out of the sun, some literally lying down underneath others ...so they must feel pretty safe. Of course there are occasional harsh words but nothing drastic.

Thank you both for your sharing your experiences.

I'm so torn because this little gelding is so darn cute and looks like a real sweetheart but I'm honestly enjoying being able to spoil my old gal Adora (16.1 hand Pinto/draft cross mare) and indulging myself in getting to know Dolly... I think I'm going to wait and not get another horse for a while.

We've done a lot of rescue the last few years. It was exhausting and took a lot to get them all into GOOD homes so right now, I feel like I'm on vacation, but with my horse buddies! Adora has been so patient with different horses coming in and out, always taking a back seat because she is so easy and the rescues were always high need. Dolly came along just to keep Adora company. Who knew that the horse's companion would become such a buddy to me? So, me and my two gals are kind of having a girl party right now. If there was a TV in the barn, we'd be watching chick flicks and eating goodies.
