Do you already have a "host" - a plan with a company to store your files? Because there are different places you can buy JUST the domain name, and then there are hosting companies in which you buy a plan with them, they give you so much space and other features, plus for another small fee they have companies they use to purchase the domain names.

For a hosting company, I suggest Aplus.net. I've been with them for probably close to 5 years now if not more and have been really happy. Never have a prob getting my questions by the tech support, great features and are really reliable and offer alot at reasonable prices.

I can't remember the whole list, but I did some research a couple years ago (yeah things changed since then probably but..) for an org. that was looking for a new place to host their website and I know that GoDaddy is one I would NOT recommend purchasing a domain from. Was not the most price efficient but have also heard about probs.

Hmm, here I was about to recommend GoDaddy. com.

I have my website www.cde4vse.com through them (both hosting and the domain name) and so far they've been great. No down-time on the site that I know of, good customer service the only time I had to use it, etc. My only complaint is that they send me too many emails despite the fact I clicked "Do not send me marketing emails" but those are easily routed to my spam folder. I'm about to renew for the second year so I'll let you know if I get bit with price increases.

Because of a magazine misprint, I recently purchased a "misspelled" domain and had it redirect to my existing website (www.whinney4me.com) and then thought to get www.whinnyforme.com as well and redirect it. I bought both these from godaddy.com for less than $10/each. They were redirecting w/in a couple of hours and I thought it was easy and inexpensive. My site and original domain (www.whinny4me.com) have been through Earthlink for years and the service is great, but expensive ($19.95/mo). If I had it to do over, I'd have it hosted someplace cheaper but I am too lazy really to figure how to switch it away to a less costly host provider

Thanks Everyone !

I really like Yahoo but they are being turds

I had a Geocities Free Website for the Past 2 Years

but now they said I am violating the Agreement

Because I have Links on my site

If I pay for a Domain name does anyone know if I still can't have Links?

Thanks for all of your Time

I *think* that would work. It's less than $10 to buy the domain name at Godaddy.com, and the redirection is free and something you can change as often as you want. You may want to just try it and see. If it doesn't work, it won't be a total loss as you will have bought your domain name and have it ready for you when you are ready to use it.

Thats really odd, that they'd tell you having links is a violation. Granted its been probably 5+ yrs since I used Geocities (and didnt read things as throughly back then) but I've never seen a website that did NOT have some links to something. Theres got to be something else going on there. I remember they had some policy about not having naughty sites but other than that I don't remember really seeing any big restrictions. I always liked geocities free website services. I at one time had like 4 websites through them.

The biggest restriction with the Geocities Free sites is that you cannot have a Sale page. They will susupend a site for having a sale page or even marking something "for sale".

The Geocities premium sites start at $4.95 a month and the $8.95 a month one comes with a domain name and more bandwidth and storage space than most people will ever use!
