I am so sorry.

Everybody has given you good advice and you have taken it. All except beating yourself up, stop it you did the best you could and it sounds like your mare will be fine now.

Again I am very sorry. Breeding is not for the faint of heart and it can be the greatest and the worst experience you've ever had. Unfortunately, especially with the minis you are working with tough odds. It never makes us feel better when we lose to the odds but you did what you should have in calling the vet and she let you down with some bad advice. Also, a breech is extremely hard for even the experienced breeder or vet to deliver alive. Our time is just so limited for the birthing process.

Let us know how your mare is after the vet leaves and please dont kick yourself so hard.

Big Hugs to you!
Very well said!

Janine, hindsight is the best sight in all the world! You did what you thought was right at the time. We all hopefully learn something after a bad experience and you hard lesson is you know which vet you can't count on! Chin up as we've all been there.......it just doesn't get any easier!

Im so sorry for your loss but glad that the mare is most probably going to be OK. We had a similar experience our first year in minis. We lost our very 1st filly to ulcers at 40 days due to a bad diagnosis from a vet who had come highly recommended. Since then we have learned that this particular vet has no use for minis she is a Morgan vet . That experience did lead us to a wonderful equine vet and we gained tons of knowledge in the process so though it was devastating to lose that filly just as it is for you we found a wonderful vet because of the tragedy and though a loss like this is never worth it there is always a lesson. (((HUGS)))) to you.

im so glad you got another opinion. And im glad the mare is doing better. Since you dont have a nearby vet is there an experienced horseperson that could help you closer?? I agree the foal wouldnt have lived even if the vet had been close. Sounds like the foal died in utero and thats why it was breech etc. Please dont beat yourself up.

I agree with Kay and others......That little one probably died before it could get into the foaling position. And as I posted on your other thread, the little fellow was probably early. There was nothing you could have done.

I'm glad you got a vet out and took care of the placenta. I'm sure your mare is going to be fine. Now, please be good to yourself!

Thank you again.

KayKay, I do know of a few horse people that are about 20 - 30 minutes away that I can call. I will definitely take your advice to seek their help in the future... and if we do this again, we'll be ready. We were just totally shocked and unprepared. She was bred in May and June. That would mean an April/May baby. I was so sure she wasn't pregnant because in July, she acted like she was back in heat again. I'm just glad I happened to check on her when I did or we may have lost them both.

Yes, the vet did say the same thing about the foal probably dying in utero causing her to abort.

Thankfully, Peanut is doing well today. She seems a little blue and mopey but I would guess that to be expected. I still can't believe this all happened. I'm looking on the bright side and I am grateful for the experience, not to mention everyone's help and encouragement. It's given me an opportunity to learn and I'll know better what to expect for the next time.

Plus, I now know a good vet and can rest a little easier knowing that he knows minis and that their futures are much better because of it. We REALLY need some good equine vets in NW Ohio.

Thanks again,

Janine,

I am so sorry about the loss of your foal but thankfully your mare will be okay.

I'm so glad that you have found a vet more experienced with horses.

Hugs to you and your precious little mare.
