Our yearling gelding, Mr. became ill on Tuesday. He had a fever of 104.5, a lot of snot in his nose, not eating, and dark red gums. It was weird because he acted fine ever since we brought him home and at Nationals. He seemed to get sick over night. We had one vet come and and he said it was a minor respiratory virus. Gave us antibiotics for that and left. Didn't trust what he said and when our regular vet got back, he came that night. One look at his gums and said he's very sick. He said he could hear stuff in his lungs but isn't mainly worried about that. He was worried about the gums. He took blood and left. He called back late that night and said bring him in asap to be put on fluids..he has kidney failure. His creatine level was almost 10 and he also had very high pottasium levels. He had a 10% chance of making it. We brought him to the vet and he was put on the fluids. He said it could have been from the stress of showing..or something contracted that would have triggered this.

Wed. morning his creatine level decreased to 4.4 (supposed to be 1). Still not eating much besides grass.

Wed. night bloodwork showed no change

Thurs. morning showed no change

Thurs evening- Creatine level decreased to 3.3. Eating a little better and went to the bathroom more.

The vet said, he wouldn't improve that much if the part of the kidneys that were damaged were unrepairable. He is surprised that he improved. He expected the opposite.

Please keep MR in your thoughts.

I am so sorry to hear this, definitely will be keeping him and you in my thoughts and prayers. Corinne

Poor MR, I will keep him in my thoughts. Sure don't know what it going on, as he was fine and dandy up at Nationals; not showing any signs of stress or distress. All ten of my horses I hauled up there and home are fine and dandy out bucking, playing, eating their heads off, even the two weanlings are totally full of themselves.

I hope the vet finds out more about what may have caused the flair up as this is a horse as with all the show horses I was hauling that had, had all his shots, 7 way and WNV, never been sick a day in his life. Always hauled well, handled trips new places with ease and I have never seen him off food.......so he must not be feeling well if he is not eating.

I hope Mr is eating well & feeling better today!

Hope he is feeling better. There must have been a bug there at nationals. One of my friends who picked up a yearling filly there has also been sick. Prayers coming from VA.

Sending prayers and good thoughts!

The improvement in his creatine levels is very encouraging, hope he continues to improve, poor boy!

Just thought I would post an update...I'm really scared now as the other little filly that was sick just lost her battle. She showed most all of the same symptoms as Mr. I believe they think it's EEE? The vets didn't think that's what Mr has...I don't know but told them about this filly. His creatine level is down to 3.1 now. His gums are still a little dark but not as bad. No fever anymore. He's still barely eating anything except grass. Still going to the bathroom. Has had fluids off and on since Tuesday. The vets still say he is in critical condition but looks better than he did on Tuesday when he was only given a 10% chance of making it. Does this sound like EEE to you all? I have never dealt with it before..I was reading on it and a symptom was involuntary muscle movements especially of the shoulder..his shoulder muscles appeared to be twitching a little one day.. do they usually not make it?

If your little boy is improving then he may make it... Mocha and he took sick about the same time and she got worse instead of better. EEE is normally fatal but not 100% of the time... Improvement is a good thing. She was only eating grass yesterday as well. Seemed better yesterday. Crashed this am. We will continue to pray for your boy.

Thanks Lyn. He actually was getting worse until he was put on fluids. The vet thought for sure he doesn't have EEE. Left a message at the clinic about the little filly probably having EEE. Right now they don't even want any owners coming to check on them since he is in the ICU.

Mocha was receiving fluids this week as well.... it didnt help her. Your guy may be the exception.

What barn were you in? We were in D.

Lyn

Well, we had our horses in C and D. Mr was in the barn up the ramp by the arena though...don't know which one that was.
