Our yearling gelding, Mr. became ill on Tuesday. He had a fever of 104.5, a lot of snot in his nose, not eating, and dark red gums. It was weird because he acted fine ever since we brought him home and at Nationals. He seemed to get sick over night. We had one vet come and and he said it was a minor respiratory virus. Gave us antibiotics for that and left. Didn't trust what he said and when our regular vet got back, he came that night. One look at his gums and said he's very sick. He said he could hear stuff in his lungs but isn't mainly worried about that. He was worried about the gums. He took blood and left. He called back late that night and said bring him in asap to be put on fluids..he has kidney failure. His creatine level was almost 10 and he also had very high pottasium levels. He had a 10% chance of making it. We brought him to the vet and he was put on the fluids. He said it could have been from the stress of showing..or something contracted that would have triggered this.
Wed. morning his creatine level decreased to 4.4 (supposed to be 1). Still not eating much besides grass.
Wed. night bloodwork showed no change
Thurs. morning showed no change
Thurs evening- Creatine level decreased to 3.3. Eating a little better and went to the bathroom more.
The vet said, he wouldn't improve that much if the part of the kidneys that were damaged were unrepairable. He is surprised that he improved. He expected the opposite.
Please keep MR in your thoughts.
