Oh Cyndia,

How scary! I can just imagine how worried you were!

HMMMM! I just bet it was that little stinker "Ravyn Beauty" who led the whole gang astray!

I always tell Jen that Ravyn is a million dollar baby, she does have that little attitude about her-and I understand she is a "bit" spoiled - this just seems to prove it. HA!

Thankfully everything turned out fine and all the babies are safely back home.

Thank goodness they are alright. It brings back memories, and only the endings are sweet.

I have had mine get out a couple of times and went from chaining the gate to having a small paddock with its own gate/chain in front of the main paddock....kind of a buffer zone.

Once, I went out in the morning to find 3 of 5 horses gone. It was a mare, her new baby and a yearling colt. I was frantically searching and thought to call the police. They had a number for the lady that with the help of a few motorists had caught them and put them in her paddock about a mile from my place. The foal got his first experience at trotting beside a gator. The electic fence turned out be partly down so that was fixed.

Another time, I was in the paddock putting their hay and grain out. They got through the gate and took off down the road. It was very cold with a lot of snow on the ground and I was not dressed for it as I was on my way to work.

I jumped into the car with some halters and leads and took off after them. I caught up to them, passed them and almost got them to turn around. In fact they stopped for a moment, then they turned and took off across a field, and into the woods where I could not follow with the snow. I went up and down the road hoping they would come out, getting more frantic with each passing moment.

I went back home to try to get a snowmobile started and get warmer clothes on. I could not get it started by myself so I took off for the school to pick up my daughters to help. When we got home, they got dressed warmly and took off on the snowmobile. I starfted off in the car. We got closer to the farm and there are several cars herding my 3 minis down the road.

You are right, they got hugs instead of coal last year!

Glad for happy endings! My boys got out one night. My collie was barking like crazy and I stupidly didn't go outside to see what she was barking at, told her to shush. Error number 1, when your dog is trying to tell you something, listen. An hour later we discovered the gate was off the hinges and the horses were nowhere in sight. After hours and hours of searching, we finally found them and walked them home, luckily it was very late at night and there was no traffic because they were all over the place. My gates now have double chains on everything, both on the hinges and the latching part. My nerves couldn't take a repeat of that night. Glad your babies are ok. Merry Christmas.

Now, Donna, Ravyn is TOO sweet and TOO much of an angel to lead the pack! LOL Actually she IS a follower and we think it was Tess and Sparrow in the lead! Those naughty babies! jennifer

Farm and Fleet has a great latch that we use here on our gates. It is easy to use even with one hand, and the only time we have ever had horses get out of it is when someone didn't make sure it was pushed shut. It also won't freeze shut. They also make one that can be used on gates to swing both ways. http://www.farmandfleet.com/catalog/product.aspx?i=545710&h=090402005

It isn't too late to add it to your Christmas list!

(No, I don't have stock in F&F or the latch company, it's just a great latch.)

We had something like that happen once when I first moved to this farm - and it is scary!

The people who used to own the property gave a local rider permission to open the gate at the back corner of the pasture and ride through the pasture. When we bought the property, we didn't know about it, and the rider assumed it was still okay. (WRONG assumption!).

Anyway, he left the gate open, and our entire herd crossed 2 major roads with one nasty 5-way intersection and were happily on their way to I-75!

The horses know the sound of my truck, and would always come running up when I got home from work. I got home and .. no horses!! The police stopped by before I could call them and asked if I was missing ponies. There were about 5 miles from home. By that time they were so wound up that we couldn't catch them. Took 8 of us several hours to catch everyone and get them home. What a nightmare!!!

Needless to say, we had a talk with the rider and a heavy chain went on the gate! The rest of our property is double-fenced and I can't tell you how much I wish the whole property was!
