My Purina feed dealer told me today to expect an increase of approximately .40 cents a bag or more on most feeds that have molasses in them such as the Omolene series, and Senior and Jr feeds. This increase is due she said because the price of sugar cane has gone up because it is being used to make ethanol.

This is not just Purina, but there should be a price hike expected in all sweet feeds from all companies.

Personally, figuring that my string of working QH show horses did great on oats for a good many years, I had already begin to tweak my feeding program back to oats for the minis, with Purina's Born to Win added to it. They don't need all that sugar anyhow so looks like I have changed over in the nick of time before they start the increase. I am looking forward to trying the minis on the oats and seeing the results. Should be interesting.

When I have to pay over $11.00 a bag for feed, that's when I'm drawing the line, especially since we can never feed the recommended amount as directed on the bags to ensure that our minis are getting any of the ingredients promised of the product anyway.

I'm feeling a lot more comfortable paying less than $8.00 a bag for whole oats and will also continue with my blocks and free choice Purina 12 12 minerals. The minerals also went up to $14.00 a bag.

Born to Win is $15.00 a bag.

marty the feed store fran and i buy from have already increased equine jr TWICE THIS YEAR. Im getting pretty fed up. We are already paying over 11.00 per bag. You know how much I love purina feeds but Im seriously thinking of switching to patriot feeds

I guess our feed price is gonna be going up then,I guess its a good thing we're cutting back on horses. Our feed cost $7 a bag.Anyone have any non sweet feed product they'd recommend?

I can feel the price of board going up once again

I had a feeling they'd go up because of gas, but not for the ethanol reason. Just because of transport costs.

I doubt they are raising it to 'get rich' off of us all... LOL I am sure that with everything else going up, the cost of processing, bagging, delivery, all on down to the farmer who grows it all.. has all gone up. Considering how much gas has gone up this past year, I dont think 40 cents a bag is comparible.

I was feeding Strategy and Ultium. I switched my horses to Nutrena Safechoice due to delivery problems with the supplier I was using, but also the price had gone up to $9.75 a bag for Strategy. Some of my horses are still on Ultium, for $14.50-$15 per bag. The Safechoice is $8.90 a bag.

I feed Nutrena XTN, have been since they came out with it something like 3 years ago.

It started at $13.95 a bag, prices have been hiked every year. Twice so far this year, right now I'm paying $18.95 a bag :new_shocked:

Any time any of us starts to feel too put out about increasing feed prices, just remember what a luxury it is to have horses. Think of people who can't afford horses and have a hard time making basic ends meet...

I switched from Omelene to Strategy quite a while ago as my dealer warned me. Robin C had once told me it was fine feed and I pay $8.60/bag now and know it will go up by Oct to $9.00 but that is still a good deal to me. Also keep in mind how many are short of hay and plan to increase their complete feeds to compensate, thus another reason for the up in $$.

Also, just like the hay shortages and gas prices effect our farm's costs, it's the same with Purina and any other company...

I think we pay about $11/bag here for Purina Adult. So if it is going up $0.40 a bag, I think that's just a little bit more than 3.5% more (?). That's just about standard inflation I think, without even factoring in shortages and fuel costs.

We've been paying $14.95-15.95 a bag for awhile for Equine Junior. We just switched to Nutrena Senior (for the beet pulp & rice bran) it's about $1.00 a bag cheaper.

When i fed equine jr/adult we paid 12.99 a bag but also they had the ship it in for us.

I just switched over to Buckeye Grow N Win and am paying 20.99 for 50lb. But the buckeye lasts longer in my eyes and i like it much better then jr/adult. I'm a big Buckeye feeds fan for sure.

Well, the cost of the Buckeye Grow N Win is closer to what I'm paying for my feed... I use Progressive Nutrition ProAdvantage Grass formula, it costs me $24.00 per 50# bag. Athough, I've got to say, my Progressive rep as been pretty good to me; he's delivered my feed to me or I've met him at his farm (about 5 miles from here) for the last 4 or 5 months. [He had some at a saddle shop in town (65 miles from here), but the shop has been closed since planting this spring. ]

I also feed a senior feed that costs $9.75/50# bag (only feed it in the winter).

I also bought some grass hay pellets at $13.00/bag (it wasn't too bad a price til I had to have it shipped in  ).

I've been cutting way back on the Omolene too and adding Born to Win, but I do feed quite a bit of Equine Sr still. May be time to cut it back too where I can, except on the true "seniors".

No end in sight to all this...

Jan

Yeah,we feed Buckeye Sr. in winter, and Im not sure what it cost, but it really made a huge difference with my horse,he's in his mid twenties, around 24 or 25,and he looks better than any of the years we've had him (almost 4),and when we bought him.It really helped him with his weight and coat.

We have been feeding Nutrena Safe Choice for several years now. I love it for our horses. They

do really good on it. I do have one senior mare who gets the omelene mixed in, and other senior

horse who will only eat omeleme. But the safe choice is great. I think you will like it.

Kay and I are paying $12.45 a bag for the Equine products. I am Patriot bound!
