I really think a lot of animal abuse is enviormentally learned behavior. I see things people do to their animals and cannot for the life of me figure out where they learned that doing this stuff was ok and where it came from. Well.......their parents and friends of course! They have been doing things that way for as long as time so it makes it right. Doesn't matter if it is wrong or right, if their parents and friends abuse their animals in lack of care and vet, then its "the right way" or "the only way"........ and no new information is considered.
My friend who is a huge animal lover has aquired a local radio talk show. Up until now they have pretty much no listeners. They recite recipes, and talk about things going on in this community such as who is giving the pot luck dinner this week, who is in the hospital, and who got what for Christmas; that type of thing. So we've been mulling over things they can talk about. We came up with trying to have some kind of "animal days." She is going to try to schedule guest speakers to address animal issues on dog and cat care and phases of horse care. Vets, farriers, feed dealers, ag extension office, etc. We are hoping that will spark interest within the county to make some serious ordinances that up until now have been non-existant. We are getting a list together of vets and farriers to interview. Hope to also get the State Vet on board also. I would like to see a vet speak on spay and neutering at the top of the list. Its worth a try.
