Hello, I recently sent in papers to the AMHA to register a foal from a mare I had purchased at a sale. I had all the transfer paper work and breeders certificate.

I got a form letter saying that there was no stallion report on file for the Sire of my filly. I have to DNA the filly. So here is my question I still can't get papers on my filly even with

DNA right.?. I have to have the owner of the stallion file a breeders report correct? I didn't keep a copy of the breeders certificate(lesson learned) so I don't know who owns him now.

sigh,

I am going to have to call the AMHA now right? I don't want to spend the money to DNA if still can't get her registered

You would have to find the stallion first anyway, DNA won't mean anything unless you parent qualify the filly. So your first step is to find out who needs to file the stallion report, that would be who owned the stallion at the time he bred the mare. If they do not still own the stallion then you will need to find that person and hope they will DNA the stallion. Once that is comepleted then you can proceed with DNA testing of your filly and getting her registered. The up side is she will be DNA'd and you won't have to do that again.

If you need help finding the stallion owner, it can be checked on the online studbook. Or by calling AMHA and asking for owner at the time of service and current owner.

Good luck. Just another reason to ask for a copy of all paperwork including the receipt from AMHA for a submitted stallion report and confirmation that the mare bought is on it.

AMHA can give you the info you need as to who owns the sire since you sent them the breeders certificate. That part should be easy. Hopefully you can get a hold of them. I have found that in these cases, the best way to get it done is to offer to pay for it all-stallion report and late fees. It will cost you, but you have a much better chance of actually getting the stallion owner to send it in. If the stallion is being used for breeding I would hope he's already DNA'd but you can ask the owner just in case. Shame that the people who sold you the horses gave you the breeders certificate when they didn't file a stallion report. Hope all works out for you!

Thank you!! I thought that might be the case, I will be asking for a copy of the breeding report that has the mare on it for any future purchase!!!! I have stopped buying mares in foal at sales due to this problem . Besides I have meet many wonderful "mini" people buying privately and gained lots of new frends

So worse case and I can't get a stallion report, even if we parent qualify the filly can't be registered?

I had a signed breeders certificate......... guessing that really doesn't count..

Ooops, I forgot to add that the stallion is DNA'ed according to my letter from AMHA

I'm not looking at the rule book right now, but arn't there consequences for the stallion owner who gives a breeder's certificate without filing a stallion report? If there arn't, there should be.

I don't see anything in the AMHR rule book about it. Perhaps if they sold all their mares they just forgot to do the stallion report or thought it wasn't necessary.

they must have turned in one for AMHR because I got those papers with no problems. It is the AMHA paper work that I have the issue with.

I was just figuring what it will cost me now to get this filly double registered $25 for the inital fee, $41 for DNA, if I have to pay for the late stallion report $25 and $10 for the mare on the stallion report. Grand total of $101.00 . That is if I can find the owners and get them to coorperate. She is a nice filly , but not outstanding, given the market today is it really worth my time and effor tto pursue this? Maybe just write off my inital $25 registration fee. bummer

Maybe I will go Pinto with her alot easier to get papers

That is the problem with buying horses at sales, you can't get to see the paperwork and it may not be right. I would get the owners name from AMHA and offer to pay for the late fees. If they are honest breeders they should just do it as there may have been other horses on the report ? I think getting her A registered would be worth the money and if you ever want to breed her she would need to be DNA tested anyhow. Good luck.

If they filed the amhr stallion report then there is a good chance they just forgot to put the mare on the amha report and might be willing to pay for it themselves. Just ask

I think if amha papers are available, then you should definitely get them-you could regret it later if you don't. Gives you many more potential buyers if you ever decide to sell her too.
