Jenny you know we are all here to support you.

Thankyou Becky for explaining about the regumate, I am also in Australia and a vet nurse and I have never heard of this product, but it could be under as a different name as is bannamine/ finnadine.

Thankyou to everyone who has helped Jenny through this...

she is a lovely person who deeply loves all her horses and is doing everything she can for them all... she really needs all our support and patience during this time as she is quite stressed which I totally understand!! I'm sure all of us would be given this situation!

please help our dear friend and her beautiful Saffire! she is an absoloutly gorgeous little mare! and we can't wait to see her little foal!

I hope that you lovely people on here will be able to support Jenny through this! I know that many of you have supported me, during my first foaling, and I only hope and pray that you can give Jenny the same kindness and support that you offered me or any new breeder.

Sorry you have to deal with this, I know how stressful it is when one of your babies is sick! I hope that your mare and foal are ok and I am sure that your new vet is taking good care of all 3 of you, they for the most part have an extensive education and experience with these things. I also hope that you will find a great support system here on the forum no matter what happens as that is what we are here for and that you will feel comfortable keeping us updated on her condition

Ok so now I want to ask something about Regumate (which I know nothing about). I understand that it can be used to hopefully 'prolong' pregnancy/keep the mare pregnant until the foal has a good chance of viability??
That is correct.

If the foal is being compromised and the mare is easily within her time to give birth, then surely to give regumate to prolong pregnancy is endangering the foal?
Regumate(oral progesterone) will not cause a mare to carry longer than she would during a normal gestation.

Jenny, we are praying for your Saffire. Last year we had a mare with placentitis and we kept her on antibiotics and regumate until her foaling time. It must be very frustrating for you but let's pray that your vet will come up with the equivalent of regumate very quickly.

Those antibiotics can work wonders when we are lucky enough to get the right one into them in time. Please still consider talking to your vet about a form of progesterone...it really does do the trick and that little one needs to stay in there as long as he/she can.

I've been following this subject and I'm so hoping to hear of a healthy foal one of these days.

The suggestions of Becky and others, Progesterone, Trimethoprim/sulfa, and banamine for the first few days have saved a number of foals for us. I hope you get the same result.

Charlotte
