3 of us headed out Saturday morning at 7 am to meet the others at Seneca Riverside Park in Caledonia at 10. We had a beautiful sunny and warm, but not so blistering hot as it has been, day for the drive. Everyone got hitched up and we set out. Here is Heather Scriven holding her horse Earl and her daughter, Debbie's horse, Jack, at the start of the drive up the 6 km Riverside trail which goes from Caledonia to York.
The trail is a wide pea gravel path that follows along the river under the trees for the most part along what used to be the main route of travel beside the canal.
It also goes through the tiny town of Sim's Landing which used to be a bustling port when the canal was there but is now a sleepy little bypass off the highway.
There were a couple narrow gates to negotiate but everyone managed to squeeze through. This is Michelle Courtemanche and Tarrah negotiating a gate followed by Willie and I.
Halfway through the trail there is a VERY steep hill which we walked up and down behind the carts and Eve Dexter unhitched her team to walk them down. Debbie helped roll the wagon down using ropes while Eve steered and the rest of us waited at the bottom.
When we arrived back at the park we took a few portraits. This is Eve Dexter with her team and Melissa Hastings and Smore.
Then we had a lovely picnic lunch and barbecue, a bit of a rest and then a swim in the river.
Everyone packed up and headed home while Debbie, Heather and I set off for our 14 km trek home. A long and wonderful day!
