I am ordering my new harness from Ozark tonight. I am unsure about weather to get it with the sidecheck or overcheck. I will not be doing any showing just pleasure driving.

My guys are much happier with a side check if they have to have a check than an over check.

I have only had one mini that HAD to have an over check. Not sure why but if she didnt have her over check on it was NOT a good drive. Its not that anything was skipped in her training or anything like that she just preferred the over rather than the side.

But like I said for the most part all my guys prefer the side check. It allows me to have them drive up from behind and still stay soft on the bridle. My mare that loved the over check she would lean on my hands and not be as responsive.

But everyone likes different things. The best one to ask would be Leia hobbyhorse23 on here.

Go with the side, shoot you may not even use the check. Most of the time you will see over checks being used in the show ring purposes only.

Sidecheck it is

Gosh, thank you! I think you already nailed it exactly however. Some horses do prefer an overcheck and in rare cases it may be useful to accomplish certain things but 99% of the time I'd say side-check or (better yet) no check, especially for recreational use. They do not hold the horse's nose out and his neck stiff the way an overcheck does, allowing him to walk out comfortably and use his topline/hindquarters to pull.
