I leased a mare this spring specifically to breed to Magic Maker. He hates her! They've been living together in a dry lot along with one or two other mares. Magic Maker likes those mares just fine but chases this other mare off when she is too close to him. I asked my vet about it and he said Magic Maker would probably change his mind when the mare comes in heat. Well, she's in heat (another mare is trying to breed her) and Magic Maker still has no desire as of yet to breed her that I've seen.

I've never had this problem before in all of my years of breeding. I took the mare out yesterday and penned her elsewhere overnight. Took her back this morning and same response. He sees her coming and his ears go back. This is a 10 yr old mare who has had previous foals.

Any suggestions?

I've never had this problem, so maybe I'm not the best person to respond, but if he has bred the other two mares maybe you could take them out. Pasture them out of his sight and try again with the one mare. My thought is that he might pay more attention to her if she is the only one. I have had stallions become overwhelmed with too many mares in season and pick out just a couple, but when they were bred he would breed the others. Good luck!

Good luck. I had a mare come in a few years ago for breeding. The stallion chased her to the far corner of the almost 10 acre field. After about 4 months I sent her home. She was in excellent shape from the running, and he eventually did stop chasing her and would let her get closer but he never did breed her.

Give her a bath, clip her, and cover her in show sheen and bug spray. Take the other mares out and then put her in. We had the same problem a few years ago and this is what worked. Good luck!

One of my stallions is a very fickle breeder. He *hates* a couple of my mares. He isn't aggressive but he isn't interested in breeding them. I would try hand breeding your mare. Tease him and get him totally ready with a mare he really likes and then slip the mare you want to breed in. Sometimes I have the mares side by side with the mare he likes facing the him and the mare I'm trying to breed with her butt facing him. Sometimes it takes some patience but this method of teasing with another mare has worked for me everytime.

Have you had her checked to make sure she isn't carrying an infection? It could be that he smells something is "off" and is doing what Mother Nature tells him to do.

Thanks for all the tips!

I've thought about a bath and changing her scent. Unfortunately, it's too cool to bathe her now. Magic Maker recognizes her from a distance, so I'm not sure how much I can disguise her? Maybe spraying her with something scented and putting a hood on her??

This mare has been here since the end of February, so you'd think she'd 'smell' like my farm. And she's been living in the pen with him since a week after she arrived. Never have had this stallion object to a mare before.

She's the only mare in heat right now, so I can't do the 'bait and switch'. Darn it.

I am going to move the other mare that's in with him.

Freeland, this mare is solid black, so not easy to change her color! I guess I could spray some stockings on her!

She just came in heat yesterday as far as I know, so I'm hopeful there is time to get her bred on this cycle.

Jean, she hasn't been checked for an infection, but it could be a possibility.

put a rug on his favourite mare for a day , then the next day put the same rug on the mare you want to breed

He doesn't like her. You wanna be forced to have sex with someone you don't fancy? Better find him a new GF.
