Hello, everyone!

This will be my first year sweating horses. I need to sweat the stomache and neck. A friend at my barn had said to leave the horses winter coats on and sweat them unclipped. He also mentioned having hoods on them to keep the heat in. I'm not sure about any of this so I figured I'd ask you guys. I also know many other people have questions about sweating so I figured it would be nice for everyone to share tips or whatnot. Thanks!!

You can buy Neck sweats and belly sweats for miniature horses, They work great! My favorites are the neosporn ones I usually work them in those. Then theres sweats that are safe to leave on all the time, I usually leave on the neck sweats that have fleece sewed onto them on all day, however you need to check them daily. The reason for this is because I had a friend who there horse, got a small piece of manure stuck under the sweat and it burned its skin alike a rash. You do have to be careful but when using them but you will also see great results.

I highly recommend you clip the horse first, or you are just inviting fungus!!!! I don't use a neoprene sweat, but I do use neck wraps on my horses. I remove them for a little bit each day, to allow the wraps to dry fully and to give the horse's neck some time to breathe.

thanks!! anyone else? Also then if you clip first would I clip the stomache area too if I'm sweating that also?

I'm sorry I forgot to tell you that the horse must be clipped before the sweats come on, I was a bit tired when I wrote it

I also after a heavy workout, I rinse off the sweat on the horse and on the neoprene wrap and let them dry before I put a fleece wrap back on.

Hope it makes sense any questions whatsoever feel free to PM me

Thanks for the help everybody!! One more thing does anybody use great neck? And if I just work them in a sweat do I have to keep them covered most of the time?

When I worked for a leading paint/quarter horse farm, I sweated necks daily. What I did per owner and trainer instructions:

Make homemade solution of equal parts epsom salts and Listerine and just a little more than an equal part of mineral oil (salt draws out water, Listerine stimulates heat and mineral oil protects the hair and skin)

1. Brush all dirt and debris from neck and mane.

2. Coat entire neck with homemade solution, rub into hair with hands.

3. Wrap neck with saran wrap leaving loose enough to get your hand under it.

4. Put 2 neoprene sweats on covering from the ears to down over the shoulders.

5. Let them stand for 30 minutes or so then work them on lounge line.

6. Let them stand tied for an hour.

7. Remove sweats and rinse/wash all areas covered in sweat and entire neck.

8. Watch for any skin irritation or damage to hair, stop immediately if found.

9. We left the sweats off the rest of the time.

Whether you think this is right or wrong, don't jump all over me. This was over 10 years ago that I worked for this farm and I watched very closely for any discomfort or irritations. Use this as is or modify to your liking but this is a very effective way to reduce necks. I wouldn't use it on the belly though as the skin is much more tender underneath.
