Ok, first what you want to do is set her up. Then when she is standing how you want her to, tell her "stand" or whatever you woudl like to use. Do this in a firm voice a few times. Then walk her and repeat the process. Do this for about a week, and then afterwards, try walking her, then standing in front like you do normally and tell her "stand" does this make sense? Just keep repeating everything in a firm voice, and repitition is the key. Check out my website fo rmmore information, or e-mail me for more help.

another thing i do once you are at the standing in front stage.

While they are standing still. I give them pats and tell them how clever they are.

But if they move i give a quick AHHH! or whatever you use as your no noise.

and quickly put their foot back. As soon as their foot goes back reward them again.

Yes repetition is the key!

Take the above advice....but Pracitse, Pracitse, Practise!!! And have lots of patience with this!

Good luck Cara! Cant wait to see her out next year showing..

Bob,

Have you tried putting Vicks (vapour rub) in Tonto's nose? This will keep his attention off of other things and he should focus more on you..and what you want him to do. Good luck to you too!

as for stallion same thing but once you have them just about standing make them focus on you only. When they look away tell him off. When he is being good tell him how good he is - reward him!

He will soon learn.

I recently purchased a new stallion (10yr old) who had no manners once I had him undercontrol I would take him out into my mares paddock and make him stand near them and focus on me not them. He soon learnt!

Also with stallions I find it best to have a paddock halter for general stuff but only use the show halter for training/standing - they know the difference.

Also with all that are learning start with only a few minutes a day & slowly build it up. Dont make it boring. Keep it interesting!

I am partial to showing my stallions. I have never had to put vicks in any of their noses. I'm sure it would have helped on a few occasions but with the work done at home and at some fun shows, they learn what is expected. LOTS of praise.

its very important that before you teach her to stand square she knows what whoa means. after that if a horse moves while i am standing them i immediately back them up 3 steps and set them up again. you have to back them up as soon as the break the stand for this to be effective. this is what i was taught at the show ring by several experienced handlers and if you do it consistently it does work

good luck!

It better, lol. It should work for any horse. Make sure when you stallion figits that you back him up and tell him no very firmly. Backing up is very important when training to stand still, or anything really. If my horses do something they know they aren't supposed too, they get to back up for a while, and then try again. Its a nicer method then beating the crap out of them.
