Today when I went to feed the guinea pigs this morning something was very weird. There were more guinea pigs then there were yesterday.

Here are two of the babies born today. The first picture looks just like daddy. The dark color on the far hip is a coco color and the near hip is red. We do not know if they will have long hair like dad or short hair like mom. The mom is a chinchilla and white short hair.

They are about the size of a medium size hampster and out of their house and running around. These babies as cute as they are will be leaving when it is time to wean.

Congratulations!! I love Guineas. They will be short haired. The long haired ones in my experience are born with fairly long hair. Enjoy them

Oh I love guinea pigs. It sounds like the mother is a silver agouti (agouti pigs have the chinchilla ticking you are referring to). It looks as though at lest the second one is a gold agouti but I cant really see him. How long is your long hair? If he is a LONG hair the babies will have thick hair but not long. They will most likely get whisps of long hairl coming off of their rump and from behind their ears. Its super cute. Did you separate the dad from the mom? If not they can breed again immediately.

Here are some brand new gold and silver agouti babies. The mother is actually a lemon agouti. Wild huh?

Here is a brand new long hair baby. She is being cradled in Matts hands. This little girl (Piper) is a silkie - all of her hair will be long with no colics so it will sweep straight back.

Here is her brother Dimitri. He is a peruvian (actually the father of this brood is a silkie and the mother is a peruvian)

Adult Dimitri (he is actually a gold agouti)

Here is a picture of dad. He is a mix of a long and short hair. The hair on his body all grows very long. Jessy keeps his hair cut short. It is the easiest.

He is very sweet and was raised in a commune type of a family. I know the person very well that we got him from and he has 2 large cages of 4 females and 1 male in each. They only have babies occasionally. His father was a 1/2 sibling to Jessie's first guinea pig. in fact Elmo looks a lot like Chrissy. Here is a picture of mom.

We got her from a family that decided they really didn't want a guinea pig.

I am waiting for spring as I really want to make a pen for the guinea pigs outside as part of the landscape. I do need to know if they dig. I don't want them going under the sides of the pen. There will be a top on the pen because we have cats. The cats spend a lot of time sleeping beside the guinea pigs but once they are outside you never know what they will do. So does anyone know if they dig?

I used to know a family in Sacramento, CA that had a herd of Guinea Pigs loose in their yard. The yard was not fenced and went into the Fields and pastures. The county made them catch them all. But they were cool and fun to watch.

I really feel bad that that family let those pigs run loose everywhere. There are many predators that will pick them off. Guinea pigs dont dig but predators will definitely dig to get to them so be careful of that. They can be very crafty to get to the pigs. Pigs are very easy prey. Also research poisonous plants and make really good shelter. Heck, bring them in at night or in bad weather. They are very susceptible to lung ailments.

Your boar looks to be a silkie. He may be lilac and white. Are his eyes red? I love that color.

I had a fabulous lilac and white silkie. he was one of my favorites.

I had no idea that they were born fully developed. I guess I thought they were like rodents or rabbits, born almost hairless and closed eyes/ears. How cool that they are minature versions of thier adult selves!
