I posted on another thread about my riding coaches being in Denmark the past week. They came home late in the afternoon on Wednesday, and I had to report the bad news to them....that their 12 year old Cardigan was sick.....very sick. He had stopped eating Tuesday morning, and had been throwing up all day Wednesday...I knew what this was leading up to. They couldn't get in to see their vet until late in the day on Thursday as he was on the road all day, but I got a call late that afternoon with the news I was dreading to hear....he was gone. He'd had a large aggressive tumor in his abdomen, and they had him euthanized. He was such a cantankerous old guy...I still remember they day she brought him home...he was a hellion from Day 1!! He didn't get along with many people, or dogs...but he and I had an understanding...and Moxie, oh how he loved Moxie....well most of the time, but she was the closest thing to a friend he ever had. We buried him yesterday morning....
Then I had to do some errands in the afternoon and came home to find out that one of my mares had foaled. I knew she was close, but had no idea she was 'that' close...first time momma and I wanted to make sure I was close by just in case. Well baby was up and standing by the time I found her. Walking around, looking pretty spiffy....LOVED attention at just hours old. I checked on them a few times into the night (I have another mare due imminently too), and they seemed fine. When I went out to feed this morning, the filly was just lying on the ground. The mare nudged her and it very groggily lifted its head. I was in there like a shot...picked it up and into the house we go. Called my riding coaches (one of whom is a retired vet), and he came over to see if there was anything we could do...ended up at the vets for some IV and got that into her....but by noon, she was gone....
In 17 years of breeding the little guys, I've been lucky enough to have only lost one other foal, and it was gone right from the start.....man it hurts to have them up and looking good, only to go downhill and lose them within 24 hours......and beating yourself up that you missed something, or overlooked something doesn't help either....I don't know how they manage to wrap themselves around your heart in such a short period of time....she was such a sweet little girl....
