Flipping thru the channels last night i came upon the worlds ugliest dog contest on animal planet. It was cute and had some really ugly dogs.

But I kinda got upset as the winners and the ugliest were those chinese hairless crested dogs. I had no idea that due to the breeding those dogs teeth fall out which in turn causes their tongue to hang out. the announcer said that was acceptable in that breed. When did delibertly breeding dogs with huge faults become acceptable? yuck

don't take everything you see on TV as gospel. ;-)

Improper dentition is acceptable in hairless chinese cresteds because teeth and hair are related genetically... but having all their teeth fall out and their tongue loll around is NOT considered acceptable. responsible breeders continually introduce the powder puff (haired) dogs into their breeding programs in order to help keep their teeth strong and healthy, albeit somewhat weird. Most chinese crested dogs who lose all their teeth are poorly bred puppy mill or back yard breeder pups whose owners were fed the same line of crap they spouted on this show so they don't take care of the dogs teeth like they should.

*proud and loving owner of two beautiful mature hairless chinese crested dogs who have good strong teeth and whose tongues only flop out when they are sound asleep*

I have to chime in here.....as a mother to 3 Chinese crested, all hairless.

: As WarPony said, there are irresponsible breeders out there, and also owners who do not care for their dogs teeth. I personally have seen many Chihuahuas and Yorkie's with their tongues hanging out for the same reason. I have an 8 pound little man, who came from one of the "top breeders" in the country, who's dogs are gorgeous, well cared for and impeccably bred. Well, got Pip because he was too small for the showring, and when he lost his puppy teeth, his adults ones never came in.......all except for his 4 molars. It was a recessive gene, he is very hairless and that's how it seems to go. Strange, I know. I am involved in breed rescue, and actually about half the dogs we get in have bad teeth in some way and most of the teeth need to be pulled. Some of the tongues fall out, some don't. Pips has hung out since he was 6 months old. Still beautiful to me. Also, I saw that same show and made me mad as heck.....I would never enter any of my dogs in an Ugly Dog contest. It peeves me when people tell me my dog is ugly, and I usually am very good about it. Sometimes, I get snarky, and ask them if they have looked in a mirror lately. That usually shuts them up.......but you should hear the comments. Most people are curious, and once they meet the dogs, learn a little about them and TOUCH them, they are great. But there are those people that just show their ignorance.

: So anyway, long story short.......keep your dogs teeth healthy, especially if you have a toy breed. Regular dentals are a must

I've seen so much misinformation about Hairless Chinese Crested Dogs on those shows that i refuse to watch them any more. Same thing with the shows that spread garbage like "pygmy horses". I do love "ugly" dogs but not enough to increase their ratings when they are clearly presenting misinformation as fact. They are judging an entire breed of dogs on this misinformation and it yanks my chain. Both of my cresteds have better teeth then my mother in laws pomeranian.

they said one was born with only molars such as described above and they said that that was due to the hairless gene. Sometimes I really think we mess with these breeds too much.

I am glad that this is not acceptable to you guys

thats why I thought i would ask as i have no knowledge of this breed.

The thing that gets me about these shows is that the information they give people about the breed leaves people judging the entire breed on information that is akin to having them judge Miniature Horses on the dwarf foals that are born. Yes, just like with dwarfism in our horses it does happen, but they make it sound as if it is entirely normal. Breeding dogs with no teeth is no more the standard in Chinese Crested Dogs then breeding dwarf horses is in miniatures. yes, it happens, and sometimes it even happens to good breeders.... but the RESPONSIBLE breeders actively work to keep it from happening.

They really are great little dogs. I've had a lot of dogs in my life, my own and rescues, and I've never had a dog whose personality thrilled me as much as my Chinese Crested Dogs.... so it makes me pretty sad to see people given wrong info. They are absolutely not for everyone, they are a high maintenance breed what with needing coats in winter and sun screen in summer... plus they have a unique look that doesn't appeal to most people... I certainly don't expect everyone to love them as much as I do. But I just hate it when people are given the wrong information and end up disliking the breed for things that aren't even remotely accurate.

Glad my little rant didnt scare anyone, LOL. Yeah......it's sad that so many people believe everything they see or hear on TV and therefore it's the only thing they belive. Then then go trotting off to a pet store to buy what they saw on the TV show and presto......they have thier own designer dog. Has anyone looked at some of the big pet supply chain stores and seen all the small clothing they are selling now? All "teacup" size. Most breeders, or at least reputable ones try NOT to breed anything of teacup size. But thanks to the movie stars who have these little dogs they are now popular. Most people dont know thye are not really healthy and don't usually live a long healthy life. Sad, huh? That's not to say ALL little dogs (under 5 pounds) are not healthy..... but most have heart, liver and/or neuro problems.

I suppose, it happens with a lot of animals. I had someone tell me one time my 32" mini was not a true mini, because he was WAY too big. I tried to explain about dwarfs, and how it happens (recessive, etc.) but the person was not listning. She said she spoke to a "breeder" and they are supposed to look "stunted". AAAGHH!

the funny thing about this is that last year when that dwarf mini was making the rounds on talk shows there was an almost identical reaction to miniature horses on a Chinese Crested board I went to.... and I used dentition in Chinese Crested Dogs to explain it, lol!
