My Dad was out measuring a storm shelter that he has ( it is not installed ) or should I say was going to measure the storm shelter.. When he heard that dreaded rattle of many rattlers

, This snake was sunning stretched out long ways beside the shelter right where my Dad was putting his tape down, one boot length away...

This was a Rattle snake of some kind, Not a Diamond back , we are not for sure what , but it measured 7 foot, with out its head and several inches or more ( As my husband shot it with his 12 ga. and it was 12 inches around... I knew we had some large snakes , but this was out in the back pasture where I had moved many mares and foals..

Good Lord...how lucky he is he didn't get bitten!!

I am sooo glad all we have here are harmless garter snakes, and little green garden snakes...I would be a nervous wreck living around those things! :DOH! :DOH!

OMG

If I ever lay eyes on a snake like that you'll never know it because I'll have a heart attack right there on the spot! Just the fear of it would do me in. Thank God he wasn't bitten.

Ewwww, I will admit I am a snake admirer and love finding king snakes and such around but with small kids and small horses those monster rattlers would not be welcome! Good thing you don't have too worry about him tagging somebody anymore.

Yikes, that's a big one! We have some around here too, but we've been very lucky not to have tangled with them. Be careful up there........

Whew! That was a big one! I don't think I would have tried my previous methods of rocks and a shovel on that one! I got one that was really long once but not in comparison to yours.

OMG is right! We think the snake that bit my filly was a Copperhead and also a large based on wideth of bite marks and size of the teeth marks. Luckily she is pulling through, so far.

I heard putting sulpher (sp) blocks out help keep the snakes away? Moth balls or lime?

I am SO glad that we don't have things like that around here! Thank goodness he wasn't bit. Ewwww! I'm with Parmela - Heart attack on the spot!

It is interesting to hear all of the various types of issues across the country and around the world that people have to contend with.

Thank you for sharing.

Just looking at the pictures, I have fainted two times (hee hee), I am scared to death of snakes! You would have found me right there next to it, dead from a heart attack!!!

That is why I will never again live in a warm climate.

I lived in south Florida for a year, one day was going in the front door of the house and heard that rattle. About 6 feet away was a diamondback, coiled. They can jump twice their length when coiled so I was well in range. I booked back to the truck and jumped on the hood. My boss was in the truck, all I could say was ssss sss sssnaakkee kkkillllll!

So, he did.

Another time, when his wife was 8 months pregnant, she stepped out the side door and stepped on a diamond back, it struck, but got the door as it had passed under the door already.

That bite would have killed the baby if not the mom as well.

Nope, I will stick with the colder climates that aren't friendly to those snakes. We do have copperhead and cottonmouth snakes, but they are very rarely seen. I have seen one in the past 17 years and it was dead and freshly baled in our hay....

The same day your dad saw that rattler, my dad and I were out reseeding a field and I about stepped on a 3' long black snake. The "nice" snake as they say here.

Across the road from us in one of Henry's cattle pastures they just killed a 10' rattler.

And last year when I was driving down our driveway we had a rattler stretched out across the entire width of the driveway.

I tried to run him over ...

My 8 year old son LOVES snakes, it scares me. We were out hiking the other day and came across a water moccasin on the banks of a river, it was not running away and he just wanted to watch it, sorry NO! It id finally go into the water, it was pretty big.

We had a storm shelter put in when we bought our new house a couple of years ago, only have had to use it once, but would not live without it!

I am with you Parmela!
Ditto!! I am not afraid of "pet" type snakes...boas and such, but anything that bites....NO thanks!!

We live in indiana and have endangered rattlesnakes. Last year I encountered 3 of them in my yard. One time I parked the lawn mower and went inside. When I came back and started the mower the snake proceded to strike at my foot as I hauled butt away. Thankfully I didnt get bite. The next time I was getting groceries from the car and went to do door where I were the snake started to coil and get ready to strike. I backed away slowly and then RAN to the car. I talked to the DNR by us as to what we can do about it since we have two young kids that I do not want to get bitten. One is 2 years old and the other is one. They told me whatever you do, do not kill them they are endangered and we are trying to bring them back to this area. I must have looked totally dumbfounded since the man said to me... miss are you ok? I told him NO, im not ok I think you guys are nuts letting a posionus snake live in my backyard where they can potentionally kill my kids. He just told me well, you'll just have to keep a better eye on your kids then. At that point I kind of wanted to hurt him.

I told my husband that if it comes between the snake and my kids sorry, its going to be my kids everytime.

I may get slamed for this but the only GOOD SNAKE IS A DEAD SNAKE!!!! I live in the desert and if one is anywhere on my property it's DEAD!!!!!

That was one huge snake!!!

I've had to deal with more rattlers than I care to think of back in Florida so NO THANK YOU! I hate all snakes with a passion. ewwwwwwwwww Belinda. That's just a super gross out. Be careful lady!

Gini I'm with you, only GOOD SNAKE IS A DEAD ONE. If I had seen that I would have died right then and there. You have to ask the young man that works for me what my reaction was to a 6' snake skin. I saw a snake in the hay stack and called him at 8 at night to come tear the stack apart to find the thing--never did.
