I'm just curious, what is the protein % of the alfalfa pellets (and/or cubes) that you use?

I just recently was able to get some alfalfa pellets (alfalfa dehy) and they are 17% protein. Its a little high for my liking, but I bought them to supplement their diet, not be a major part of the diet. I know I've seen alfalfa pellets with around 15% protein, so just curious as to what others can get.

Chanda, the ones I buy here in Oklahoma City are 15% protein (Cross Brand). These are sun cured alfalfa pellets. Not sure if that makes a difference in the protein content, but I do know it helps to lower the carbs.

Hi Chanda,

The IFA alfalfa pellets I get are 13% protein.

Our Alfalfa cubes we get have 15% protein. The brand is Bio-Cube and they come out of Canada(www.bio-cube.com). They are the best cubes around I've found to feed. Tried the local feedstores cubes and they are hard as rocks, take forever to soak and my horses refuse to eat them. The Bio-Cubes are very consistent, soak and fluff within 15 minutes and smell great. My horses will eat their cubes over their grain. My horses get a higher protein grain, so I was happy to be able to find really good quality cube without as high of a protein level as I have seen in other brands.

Thanks for the info. I thought most were around 15%. I'm just lucky I can get any at all, so I'll be happy with what I have.

Both grass nuts and alfalfa cubes tend to be 15/16% guaranteed protein level, here.

This also applies to dried chopped grass (chaff)
