Lynn, I concur, the "local" AMHR shows I went to were well attended as well. I was delighted at the entries and variety of classes available at the Noth East Wisc club show I went to over Memorial Day weekend. It was awesome! Lots of performance classes, and entries!

I just show the minimum basically, though occassionaly an extra show or two, to get qualified for Nationals. I would probably show more local AMHR shows IF ammy points counted towards HOF, OR(and this is probably the more important of the two to me) if more of these shows offered more performance classes. It isn't that I begrudge the halter exhibitor their fun, but the "typical" amhr show I've been to is 80 halter, 20 performance..a very long day for someone that has no interest in lead n feed.

LOL jill had to crack up at your post.. can say raven beat you to it.. our fat little gelding casper has been showing for years and knows the ropes including that bait is in pants pockets and if you dont give it up to him well his motto is then OFF WITH YOUR PANTS and has pantsed raven on many occasion .. luckily for me i am not anywhere near as skinny as raven and mine dont come down past this ummm not so tiny rear quite as easily

I have to add that the way I see it -- not as a consolation class for those who can't cut it in amateur or open, but as additional recognition for those who do their own training, and thus including many highly competitive entries -- also would make long shows even longer.

So while I answered yes in the poll, realistically I'd like to see this primarily for youth.

Well, our local shows are not that well attended; the AMHR shows do not offer any ammy classes at all. Would adding ammy classes (of any sort) improve attendance? I don't honestly know, but it would be interesting to see.

If we were going to have ammy classes, I think it would be good if they were AOTE, just because (as someone has already said) it does give recognition to those ammy owners who do it all themselves. Mind you, most of the amateurs in this area are strictly do it yourself-ers, so it might not make much difference if we had AOTE or just plain amateur classes.

Open is the division I enjoy showing in the most--that is where I want to be, ammy classes & how they're divided don't make a lot of difference to me, but if they were offered here I'd show in them & given a choice of ammy I would like to see them be AOTE. I voted yes in Kay's poll here.

Well, since my trainer money has now gone into a new car payment when the van blew up and also the rescue horses, I guess AOTE is the place for me! ;)

Actually, I LOVE training my own horses. I spend a lot of time with them. I would love a way to showcase our accomplishments together, proving that we have achieved them ourselves!

Well, now I went back and read all of the responses. I can't say I know how the AOTE classes filled over the year in the five AMHA shows I attended, I was too busy trying to get my own horse ready or helping others.

I ended up not being able to show Alladdin in AOTE this year because he spent 6 weeks with my trainer so that she could evaluate his ability to be a driving horse. Under AMHA rules, that puts us out of the running for the current year. I DO plan to show him AOTE in '06. To me, it is the extra recognition of doing it yourself.

Based on the responses on this thread, there are two things I didn't particularly like. One, now that I had my horse at a trainers' place for six weeks, he would be banned from that class forever? How much did that six weeks really contribute to his overall lifetime of training? And because he was being trained with an eye for driving, does that mean that he is now aced out of the competition for halter, too? Also, what if you bought a horse from someone else who had it with a trainer but your are a complete novice yourself? So I am not all for the rule that states the horse has NEVER been with a trainer. I am more for a time limit like they have in AMHA.

If you will notice they have also clarified the AMHA rule to state that it is just fine for a trainer to haul or pet or lead your AOTE horse as long as they are not training it. Petting does not equal grooming.

Finally, I am REALLY against the suggested part of the rule that would discourage an ammy from getting coaching. I think getting coaching should be highly encouraged!!!

This has been a good discussion.
